On Saturday, Sept. 18, the Girls Varsity Soccer Team started its season with an exciting upset win. Playing last year's State "C" Champions, Cold Spring Harbor, the Lady Bulldogs were victorious in the game that ended with the score of 1-0. After play was going back and forth with both teams showing a stingy defense, Trish DelMonaco was fouled. Coach Goldberg directed Michelle DiFede to take the kick (from 32 yards away) and she scored the lone goal. The defense of Karen Fitzpatrick, Michelle DiFede, Jen D'Albenzio, Rosa Oliveri, Kristina Ruff, Jessica Fredricks, Tricia DelMonaco and Danielle Cama worked very hard to help goalie Christina O'Brien's first shutout. The victory was very rewarding for all Lady Bulldogs and a great start.

The Island Trees Boys Varsity Soccer Team started off its championship season with wins against Mepham and Roslyn. The Bulldogs beat Mephan 2-0. Mike Santor and Rob Silva scored goals. Rich Staab recorded the shutout. In their first league game the Bulldogs beat Roslyn 3-0. Goal scorers were Dan Beale, and Jonathan Sguigna with two. Staab recorded his second shutout. The Bulldogs are 2-0. It's a great start for seniors Staab, Tim Law, John McCauley, Rob Saladino, Matt Hallas, James Keating and Erick Alahverdian. This year's captains leading the team are Saladino, Staab, Law and Sguigna.

The Island Trees Girls JV Soccer team opened their season with a 4-2 win over North Shore. Alyssa Fleming opened the scoring in the first half midway through the period. After ending the first half at 1-0 Island Trees came out strong and scored its second goal at the two-minute mark on a goal by Jamie Zetterberg. After North Shore closed the gap to 2-1, Chelsea Marciano had two goals to increase the lead to 4-1 in the victory. Excellent work by Kate Schamberger and Stephanie Lucia who filled in for regular goalie Erin Dodge who was out sick. In our second game against a very tough Cold Spring Harbor team, Island Trees again came out strong on goals by Melanie Hallas and Keri Spiess in the first 10 minutes of the game. Cold Spring Harbor came back in the second half with tremendous pressure and scored twice to tie the game. Only outstanding play by goalie Erin Dodge and the defense of Liz Liguori, Elena O'Brien, Diana Connolly and Ida Falcone preserved the tie. Keep up the good work girls.

The JV Football Bulldogs opened the season with a heartbreaking 14-6 loss against the Malverne Mules. The young Bulldog team played good enough to win, but committed several costly and untimely mistakes that were the difference in the game. The Bulldogs constructed an impressive 15-play 70-yard drive to open the game. The line anchored by Captain Ed Seremeta with Fernando Suarez, Billy Mullen, Matt Fiorello, Tom Tunison and Dondi Peterson gave Mike Rossi room to run the football. Rossi capped the drive with a 7-yard touchdown scamper. Rossi ended the day with 13 rushes for 59 yards and 2 receptions for 15 yards. Quarterback and Captain Jimmy Lyons passed for 10 for 52 yards. Jimmy also had a strong game defensively. Captain Jim Conigliaro led the team with 8 solo tackles and 5 assists starting at middle linebacker. James Scrimo finished the day with six tackles from the cornerback position.
