The fall school semester is now well under way here in our town. Each weekday, youngsters are on the run, either walking, biking, or being transported to school by car or school bus. Street corners are transformed into busy areas as school buses load and unload their precious cargo, our children.

This seasonal increase in roadway and pedestrian traffic makes it necessary for motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving. Even at the most hectic times of the day, while heading to work, rushing for an appointment, or just trying to stay on schedule, extra special care must be taken by motorists when school buses are in the vicinity.

Flashing red lights indicate that the school bus will soon stop to pick up or discharge its young passengers. Children may also be crossing the street in that vicinity. Since the actions of youngsters are so unpredictable, motorists must be especially wary of children darting in front of their vehicle or a stopped school bus. It is imperative that all traffic approaching the school bus from any direction come to a complete halt until the flashing lights have been turned off by the bus driver. Not only is this an important safety measure, it is also the law.

Children, often very anxious to get home after school may become careless when crossing the street. The responsibility for their safety lies with each of us. On behalf of all the members of the Hempstead Town Board, I ask all drivers to obey all traffic laws, and be especially cognizant of those laws intended to protect our children. Remember to observe posted speed limits in school zones. Be sure to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Heed the important warnings provided by flashing red lights on school buses.

It takes only a split second for a tragedy to occur. Please drive carefully so that our children may have a safe and rewarding school year, and that they may enjoy a future filled with limitless promise.
