Division Avenue High School senior right-handed pitcher Ryan Darcy was selected by the New York State Sports Writers to the First Team All State Baseball Team. Darcy is the third Division player to be selected to the All-State team. Sophomore Eric Fierro was selected to the sixth team and junior Dan Cronin was selected to the second team. The irony is that none of these players had been selected by Newsday as top players to watch going into the season.

This season, Darcy pitched the Blue Dragons to the League, County and Long Island Championship. Darcy broke the season record for wins by any Division pitcher as he recorded 13 victories during the year. This puts Darcy in a very elite group of Division Avenue pitchers who have excelled in baseball after high school, in college and pro ball. Darcy was not only a big game performer, he was a team leader. Among his accomplishments this season were three shutouts, including a no-hitter. This year he was overlooked for the Diamond Pitching Award, despite the fact that he led all of Nassau County pitchers with wins, as well as led the county with the most strike-outs, recording 141 for the year. This puts Darcy third in the all-time list of strike outs for a Division pitcher in one season. He is just behind Dennis Schneidler who was second with 150. The all-time leader is Jim Chenevey with 151. Chenevey went to Harvard and played baseball there and graduated with academic honors. He was later selected by Oakland in the fifth round and played in their organization for several years. Chenevey made it to Double A ball before he retired to go into the business world.

Darcy is also a top student, who carried a 90+ average in the classroom for his four years at Division. To go along with his average, Darcy also scored over 1200 on his SATs. He has signed a letter of intent for Manhattan College for the fall. Manhattan is a Division I school which has made significant strides with their baseball program and has become one of the up and coming baseball programs in the Metropolitan area.. Darcy not only received baseball scholarship money, he also received academic scholarship money. He will receive 80 percent of his college tuition, fees, room and board for the next four years from these scholarships.
