For the third consecutive year the Massapequa Girls Fastpitch Nassau County Police Athletic League, under the direction of Police Officer William Walker, won the county championship by beating the Diamond Pros of Williston Park, 5-0.
The team is made up of dedicated young ladies from Massapequa, Plainedge, MacArthur and Island Trees High Schools. It is coached by John Musarra, Laurie Logan and Roger Forsythe.
They finished the season with a record of 10 wins, one loss and one tie.
In the championship game Tuesday night at Kelleher Field in Williston Park, going into the bottom of the sixth with the score tied at 0, MacArthur/s Jackie Burd doubled to lead off the inning; she was moved to third on a fielder's choice by Jaclyn Habermehl, and then a perfect squeeze bunt by Massapequa freshman Shannon Alter scored the potential winning run. The girls went on to score four more times and then left the rest to Island Trees standout Jamie Pietrantoni. She retired the side in order on the top of the seventh, going the distance for the win. Pietrantoni only allowed two hits, one walk and struck out 11 in the seven-inning game.
