My wife and I, for more years than we can remember, have enjoyed the theatrical productions presented by the Ivy Lane Players at the Levittown Public Library. Several weeks ago, for example, we enjoyed watching a delightful drama dealing with the close relationship that had developed between two neighboring families, in an English community, during the cold war era. Upon entering the library's Community Room we obtained copies of the program; which, I mistakenly thought were copies of Levittown's recently defeated school budget. We both laughed, however, upon realizing that the show's title was A Pack of Lies.

Several day later, "A Pack of Lies" became a reality following receipt of a postcard advising us of the July 14 budget re-vote. My 80-year-old neighbor, Frank, probably summed up community reaction, to this budget resubmission, best when he indicated that the Levittown School Board "...is once again attempting to insult our intelligence." I suspect that Frank is correct!

How can the Levittown School Board demand more of our monies when it presides over a system in which 1/3 of our 4th grade students cannot read at grade level; one of our schools is among the lowest performing high schools in Nassau County; and its residents already pay one of the highest tax rates on Long Island? The addition of $400,000 to our already bloated contingency budget isn't going to make one iota of difference in the education of our children.

It's small wonder that over the years a number of PTA Presidents, who allegedly support this budget, have quietly removed their own children from Levittown's schools and placed them in nearby private or parochial schools.
