The Division Avenue Blue Dragons, appearing in their 10th County Championship in 11 years, swept Wantagh in two straight games to win its fourth county title in the last five years.
In game one of the county championship series Division defeated Wantagh 2-1. Ryan Darcy was the winning pitcher, allowing only four hits while striking out nine batters.
Division scored in the first inning when Steve Juliano doubled and scored on a single by PJ Antoniato.
After Wantagh tied the score in the top of the sixth, Eric Fierro led off with a double. Darren Barlow then pinch ran for Fierro and scored the game-winning run (for the second game in a row) on an infield grounder by Antoniato.
In game two Division defeated Wantagh 5-1. Dan Cronin was the winning pitcher for Division, limiting Wantagh to only three hits, all by number three batter James Walsh. Cronin struck out seven en route to his victory.
Division scored one in the first when Joe Woods, Eric Fierro and PJ Antoniato singled. The Dragons scored again in the third when Steve Juliano led the inning off with a double and moved to third on a single by Eric Fierro. Juliano then scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Muniz. In the fourth inning Division broke the game open when they scored three runs. Kevin Schneider led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a single by Cronin. Juliano followed this with a homer, giving the Dragons the insurance runs they needed.
Last week the Levittown Division Avenue High School Varsity Baseball team won the County Baseball Championship. This was just one of the things that the Blue Dragons won.
The day after the Dragons won the County Championship they were notified by the president of the Nassau County Umpires Association that they also won the Sportsmanship Award that the Umpires Association gives out every year. It was certainly an honor for the team to win the baseball title but winning the sportsmanship award the same year was an even bigger honor for them. Over the years several teams have had great seasons and several teams have displayed sportsmanship throughout the season but only the Dragons have been able to do both at the same time. This is not the first time this has happened. The Dragons won the County Title and the Sportsmanship Award at the same time during the 1997 season. To add to this the Division Junior Varsity team won the JV Sportsmanship Award for the 1998 and 1996 baseball seasons.
