Last Monday the Division Avenue High School Varsity Baseball team beat New Hyde Park by a score of 13-0. Ryan Darcy was the winning pitcher allowing only two hits, while striking out two of the three batters that he faced.
The Dragons scored four runs in the first inning as Alex Muniz delivered the big hit with a two run single. The Dragons followed that with six runs in the second inning on hits by Dan Cronin, Joe Woods, Steve Juliano, Eric Fierro, Joe Laudisio, PJ Antoniato, and Alex Muniz.
The big hitter for the Dragons was Antoniato with three hits including a homer. Other big hitters were Juliano, Fierro, and Marty Timlin who had two hits each. Chris Hagan also added a pinch hit single for Division.
Laudisio played a very good defensive second base in support of the strong pitching of Darcy.
On Tuesday Division played a tougher New Hyde Park team and found themselves down 2-0 very quickly. Division made it 2-1 in the second and tied the score 2-2 in the fourth inning. In the fifth the Blue Dragons erupted for five runs. Big hitters that inning were Joe Woods, Anthony Dell'Aera, and Eric Fierro who had a two RBI hit. Alex Muniz added an RBI hit in the sixth inning.
Dan Cronin was the winning pitcher for Division scattering two hits while only walking two. He struck out eight batters en route to his victory.
On Thursday the Dragons completed the sweep of the New Hyde Park team, defeating them 9-1. PJ Antoniato was the winning pitcher hurling no hit ball for the five innings that he pitched. He had six strike outs in those five innings.
The Dragons offense was led by Alex Muniz who had two hits with three runs batted in. Kevin Saragossi also had two hits with two RBIs. Joe Woods paced the Dragons with four hits. Junior Joe Cosenza had a big hit for Division and made some beautiful defensive plays.
The Dragons have won their league championship- this season with a 21-0 record. This gives Division its 20th championship in 21 seasons dating back to 1979. This also gives Division 20, 20 plus win seasons in that same span of time.
This past Saturday Nassau County Baseball had its opening round games. In the first round the Division Avenue Blue Dragons were matched against the North Shore Vikings and had to face their two-time all-County pitcher, Terrence Vogenberger, whose father not only was a Division graduate but is also an ex-administrator for the district.
Ryan Darcy pitched the Division Nine to a 3-0 shutout victory. He allowed the North Shore batters only two hits while striking out nine batters in the process.
Darcy was the beneficiary of some excellent defense by infielders PJ Antoniato, Steve Juliano, Joe Laudisio, and catcher Eric Fierro.
The Division attack scored its first two runs in the third inning when Kevin Saragossi led off with a single. Dan Cronin reached first on an error, Joe Woods walked and then Steve Julian ripped a line drive to knock in Saragossi. The bases were still loaded when Eric Fierro walked to bring in another run.
