After a one year absence, Ken Auer who had previously served six years on the Levittown Board of Education, ran unopposed to reclaim a seat on the board.

Auer, who spent his first three years as a trustee, his fourth year as board secretary, and his fifth and sixth years as board president chose not to run for re-election in 1998. When asked about his decision to leave the board Auer explained that at that time he needed to pay more attention to his business. He has owned the Salty Dog, a popular Levittown restaurant, for three years and had previously been a motorcycle police officer for the New York City Police Department for 16 years.

When asked why, after only a year, he chose to return to the Levittown Board of Education, Auer responded that he chose to come back because George Bruno didn't run.

Auer stated, "I'm glad to come back, I enjoyed my previous six years there." Right now, according to Auer, what he would most like to see accomplished is getting the budget passed. He was elected the same day as the nearly $100 million Levittown School Budget failed.

The passing of the school budget is just one challenge that the board is facing in the coming year. The biggest challenges are, said Auer, "Probably getting Division Avenue up to the standard it should be and keeping up with the mandates of the state on the Regents."

One of the major contributions that Auer brings to the school board is his past experience from his previous terms. This experience is recognized and appreciated by other members of the board who have served with him and by the Superintendent of Schools Herman Sirois. The current school board president Diane Shapiro, when asked about his return, stated, "It's great. He's an asset to the school board. He was on the board before and he is very pro-education." Sirois commented, "We're always pleased to see people with experience return to the board and we certainly welcome Mr. Auer back."

Auer concluded, "I'd like to be able to work with and I feel I can continue to work with everyone that's there. I think it's a good group that's there and I think they'll all do the best they can for the Levittown community."
