We read with interest the article in last week's Tribune entitled "Despite Lingering District Disparity, Division Continues to Improve." We congratulate the efforts of our school board and the dedication of Division Avenue High School Principal Harry Chertok in the educational improvements at his fine school.
On the other hand, anyone that took a close look at the New York State Report Card (printed in Newsday) should feel that their children at Division Avenue High School have been cheated out of a better education by this school district. The NYS School Report Card clearly shows that as the children attend our middle schools (Wisdom and Salk), their test grades are virtually equal. It is interesting that once they attend our two high schools, their educational instruction and test results differ greatly. This results in a situation wherein the students at MacArthur are receiving a substantially better education than those that attend Division. Is that fair? We think not! The residents within the Division Avenue High School area pay the same school tax rate, but the high schools don't offer similar educations to our students.
Division has made progress in its NYS Report Card results of 42 percent of Regents diplomas issued to its students. The administration touts this as a great accomplishment, but what they don't tell the residents is that as a result of this, Division Avenue High School is now at the level that MacArthur was at 10 years ago. This school district's administration regularly does its "dog and pony show" at school board meetings, PTA meetings, etc. to show the "great progress" Division has accomplished. But, while we are making progress, why are our children receiving an education that is approximately 20 percent lower than its sister school? How many students at Division will not achieve the level of success that their counterparts at MacArthur receive?
We absolutely congratulate the teachers and parents at MacArthur for their level of achievement. We hope the students of MacArthur continue to grow, prosper and achieve even greater accomplishments as time goes on.
We have a serious problem with the educational inequity in our high schools! We, the parents of Division Avenue High School students, simply want an equal opportunity education for our children, no more, no less! When we purchased our homes many years ago, we were not aware that we bought them in the "wrong" high school district. If you examine the NYS School Report Card, you will see that other school districts in this county (with multiple high schools within their districts) are very close in their educational achievement. Why aren't we?
This school district's administration has already sacrificed thousands of Division Avenue High School students over the years by not providing them with a level of education equal to their sister school. How do we make this up to them? We can't, but we can put an end to it. Well, the time is now, enough is enough!
We, the parents of Division Avenue High School students, call upon this school district's well paid administrators to do their job and make provisions to immediately improve the educational opportunities for the students at Division Avenue High School. If they feel they can't, then reduce the school taxes of those of us in the educationally handicapped Division Avenue High School district. By doing this, we can hire tutors that will bring our children up to the educational level of MacArthur High School students.
The Levittown school district's administrators slogan "Success for Every Student" should be changed to "Success for Every Student, if you live in the "right" high school area."
