Every year school children count on having a week off somewhere around the end of March or middle of April. This is a great opportunity for many families to take some time off, to enjoy those vacations they didn't get to go on over the summer or during February break, but what is the real meaning behind this Spring Recess?
Spring Recess is designed around the Passover and Easter holidays. Whether you are Jewish or Christian, this is traditionally a very sacred time of year. It is a time of sacrifice and remembrance. While enjoying that week off, it is important to remember why that vacation is built into the calendar.
Whether it is sacrificing something for Lent or participating in a seder many Americans remember religious history at this time of year. Celebrating the Jews' homes being "passed over" and not having the eldest son killed in Egypt, Jews today commemorate this event during Passover. Christians commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus in order to save all people. This is what this time of year is all about, not a week off from school, Easter Bunnies, baskets, or colored eggs.
While the commemoration of these events are joyful, the meaning behind them must not be forgotten.
As this weekend approaches, enjoy your family celebrations but keep in mind why these holidays exist.
Happy Easter and Passover!
