It seems as though luck has followed the Division Avenue Girls Varsity Basketball team this season. Not only did the Ladies qualify for the Nassau County Playoffs, but they also received many awards given out by the Nassau County Coaches Association and New York State.
Some people might agree that there must be some luck involved but not junior forward Colleen Sullivan. Sullivan was quick to point out that, "Luck favors the prepared person and the prepared team. All the girls work very hard in their classes as well as on the basketball court."
Sullivan wasn't the only person singing the praises of the Lady Dragons. Eileen Barrett who teaches English at Division Avenue said, "I have many of these girls in class and they are among some of the finest students I have ever taught."
John Avena a business teacher and track coach at Division echoes the sentiments of Barrett. Avena stated, "Being a coach and a teacher I am able to see many of our students in and out of the classroom. I have noticed that the girls basketball team is not only blessed with talent on the court but also with brains and a great work ethic that allows them to succeed in class as well."
Barrett and Avena may be right on target. This season the Lady Dragons won numerous awards. Sullivan was selected to the All-Conference Team for the second year in a row. Sullivan is the all-time leader in "double-doubles" for the Blue Dragons. Kathryn Taraci was chosen as a member of the All-Class Team as well as for the Nassau County Scholar Athlete Team. Michelle Davis was selected to the Coaches Associations highest award the All-County Team. Davis was also a member of this year's Empire State Team.
In addition the entire Girls Varsity Team won a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar Athletic Team Award. The overall grade point average for the Lady Dragons was a 93 percent. The girls qualifying for this award are Michelle Davis, Marissa Gouskos, Charissa Knox, Crystal Murphy, Chivon Noonan, Melissa Quartarolo, Christina Squillante, Colleen Sullivan, Kathryn Taraci and Carri To.
