Division Avenue Lady Dragon Girls' Basketball Team

On Feb. 9 the Division Avenue Girls' Basketball Team defeated Calhoun High School, 61-34. Every player on the Blue Dragon squad scored! Colleen Sullivan and Michelle Davis led the way with 14 points each. Sullivan also had 12 rebounds and 6 steals, while Davis added 8 assists. Senior Captain Kathryn Taraci had 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals in this, her last regular season high school basketball game. Carri To and Christina Squillante combined for 11 points and 13 rebounds. Chivon Noonan, Crystal Murphy and Melissa Quartarolo each added a basket and turned up the intensity defensively on Calhoun that resulted in another 8 steals.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season has been junior guard Marissa Gouskos. "Goose," as she is affectionately known to her teammates, started the season sitting on the bench and getting very little playing time. As the season went on and she became accustomed to the Varsity system, she began to get more playing time and proved to be a very productive member of the squad. By the Calhoun game, Gouskos had worked herself into the starting lineup and was playing 80 percent of the game.

Due to this total team effort, the Blue Dragons qualified for the Nassau County Playoffs for the sixth time in the past seven years. Division was seeded 13th out of 16 teams and played fourth seed Manhasset in the first round. After a very exciting first-half, the Dragons only trailed by 3 points. The second-half found the ladies in a scoring slump, managing only 6 points in the third quarter. After a good fight, the Blue Dragons succumbed to Manhasset 53-32. Sullivan led Division with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals. This was the eighth game this season in which Sullivan had a "double-double!" Sullivan now is the all-time leader in this category for the Lady Dragons.
