Members of the Levittown Property Owners Association and residents in general have expressed concerns over the last few months about the number of illegally parked commercial vehicles and auto repair businesses on residential properties around Levittown.
This issue has recently been brought to the Town of Hempstead's attention, according to Town Councilwoman Linda Reed. She explained that the town has told concerned residents that if they bring individual problems to their attention the town will send an inspector to take care of the situation. She said, "You really need to pinpoint it- to go and do a sweep of Levittown, or any community, is very difficult but if it is brought to our attention we will act on it."
Reed believes that two of the main concerns are that residents do not want their neighborhood to look like an industrial park and safety of the children in the area. Child safety is a huge concern to many Levittown parents because the large trucks create a sight problem, blocking the vision of children trying to cross the street. Reed said the safety of the children is the concern that she has heard most frequently. At a recent LPOA meeting one resident brought up the fact that at one home there are trucks and cars parked, being repaired, all over the residential street so a school bus found it impossible to turn and children were almost hit due to the poor visibility. Another resident pointed out that there is an 8-wheeler truck parked by Northside Elementary School and the dangers of that situation. The appearance of the area is also a concern to residents. One LPOA member stated, "It is dragging down Levittown's appearance."
Several residents at the LPOA meeting stated the belief that truck owners do not care about their neighbors and chalk the fines they receive up as a business expense. One resident said, "We should make it too expensive for them by raising fines."
LPOA President Jim Morrow said that neighbors should get together and write the Nassau County Police Department Commissioner and the IRS about illegal car repair businesses and supply them with the addresses of these offenders.
There are laws that many of these vehicles are in violation of and if it is brought to the attention of the proper authorities the situation can be resolved. Since there is no overnight commercial vehicle parking allowed anywhere in the Town of Hempstead this is one specific concern that can be brought up. Police Ordinance 20264 says that commercial vehicles cannot be left on the street later than midnight so by midnight these vehicles must be removed. The Town of Hempstead Building Zone Ordinance 302H1 says that commercial vehicles cannot be left overnight on residential property. Residents can contact the Town of Hempstead to find out the exact laws regarding commercial vehicles.
