The Town of Hempstead is not only America's largest township, it is one of our nation's oldest. Our rich and diverse history dates to 1644 and traces our development from the earliest days of European settlement on the North American continent. We are proud of our unique heritage and maintain an avid interest in ensuring its preservation for the enjoyment and education of future generations of Hempstead town residents. One very important aspect of this endeavor is the work of the town's Landmarks Preservation Commission. Through the commission's efforts, a number of structures of historical or architectural significance have been identified and provided with landmark status. These landmarks, located in communities throughout the township, will forever be preserved and will serve as constant reminders of Hempstead town's storied past.

The town has published and has made available for residents, a booklet entitled Preserving Hempstead's Heritage. This 26-page publication features photos and synopses of 20 historical buildings that have been designated as landmarks by our township.

After reading through this booklet, town residents may think they know of a structure that could be considered for landmark status. An application for landmark designation is included within the publication for such use. If your house, or the house or building you know is representative of a specific historical era, architectural style, was the home of an historical personage, or in any way played a role in the development of your community, it could be considered by the commission. Should the Town of Hempstead declare your home as an "historical site," you will be preserving a piece of history for the enjoyment and education of future generations. You will also receive the benefit of a small tax reduction.
