The St. Bernard's CYO girl's senior team capped an undefeated season in 1998 with a thrilling 67-57 triple overtime win over St. Joseph's of Garden City. The team finished 13-0 overall; 9-0 during the regular season, and 4-0 in the playoffs. This victory capped an amazing season which saw these girls win by an average margin of 28 points for the season.
In a league where teams are comprised of high school juniors and seniors, this team is made up of six juniors, two sophomores and one freshman. This means that the entire team can come back next season to defend their title.
The scoring was balanced throughout the season, with any girl capable of carrying the team on a given night. If they weren't scoring, they were playing great defense, rebounding, making a steal or getting an assist. "This was the most unselfish and balanced team I have ever seen," says coach Steve Belmonte. "There are no egos on this team. They don't care who scores or rebounds or stops an opponent from scoring. It's a total team effort."
All of these girls are major contributors to their high school teams. Jamie Abrams, Lisa Belmonte, Jesse Dlabola, Erin Hughes and Brandi D'Amico will play key roles on the Holy Trinity High School Varsity team this season. Chrissy Pagano is a key player on the St. Dominic Varsity team. Michelle Davis is a big part of the Division High School Varsity plans for this season.
Amanda Davidson and Lilly Alban will be playing for the Kellenberg High School varsity team this season. These schools are the lucky benefactors of this very special group of girls. Good luck to all of them during the upcoming high school basketball season.
