The girls varsity soccer team has done a creditable job and has earned the respect of its opponents. Despite the loss of two starters, Rosa Oliveri (knee) and Kristina Ruff (broken leg), the Lady Bulldogs has performed well in every game. Their record of 3-5-1 does not indicate how well they are playing. In the East Meadow tie, Michelle DiFede was asked to play a striker position (regularly sweeper) in the final minutes and scored on a header with only 17 seconds to go in regulation time. The East Meadow goalie made 34 saves!! The Lady Bulldogs won last Saturday's game against Clarke 1-0 on Danielle Sbarra's goal. Afterwards, all the players and their families got together and had a mini feast comprised of heros, pizza, cookies, cake and drinks. Once again we would like to thank Mrs. Ruff and Mrs. DiFede (along with Mr. Connell) for setting this up. On Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs played a tough game against first place Baldwin, only to lose 2-0. Both goals were scored late in the second half. Elaina Koutsoftas had an outstanding game in goal.
On Oct. 2 the girls JV soccer team defeated East Meadow 2-0. It was an especially nice win because they are missing a few players and so some players had to play new positions. Lauren Smath filled in for regular goalie Jessica Musumeci and stopped two point blank shots, while Ida Falcone, who had never played stopper before, did an excellent job. The rest of the team also picked up their game on both offense and defense. Tara Berman just missed opening the scoring when her shot hit the post and the rebound went wide. Tara Berman just missed opening the scoring when her shot hit the post and the rebound went wide. Courtney McMills put them in front with a great shot from 28 yards out and Ashley Tonno finished the scoring 10 minutes later. Both goals came in the second half of a well-played game. Keep it up girls!
The JV Bulldog football team keeps on rolling with a 33-0 rout of the North Shore Vikings. The team was fired up for their first home game. This was evident at the end of the first quarter, score 19-0 Bulldogs. The Bulldogs scored three touchdowns on two offensive plays and a punt return. Rich Catherall scored on runs of 35 and 50 yards. He was led by the kicking of fullback Ryan Linzie. Catherall finished the day with 11 carries, 129 yards and five receptions for 78 yards and three touchdowns. Tom Lombardi scored a touchdown on a punt return. Quarterback Gerard VanLeuvan completed seven out of 11 passes for 92 yards. Norberto Cabarcas capped the scoring on a 30-yard touchdown run. The defense was just awesome. They allowed North Shore's offense only two first downs and 23 yards total for the game. Jeff Ritter had a big day with five solo tackles and six assists. With the score 26-0, the reserves entered the game to preserve the shutout. This group did a great job containing the Vikings' offense. Ricky Bailey had a sack of the quarterback, Justin Salvage had a touchdown-saving tackle and Charles Lombardi had three tackles (two on special teams) and an interception. The victory improves the Bulldogs record to 3-0. The next game will be the Bulldogs' toughest challenge to date in Cold Spring Harbor vs. the Seahawks.
