The Island Trees Boys Soccer team started their County Championship defense with games against MacArthur, Smithtown and Hewlett. The Boys blanked MacArthur 2-0 with Greg Salvage scoring two goals and Ron Olivero recording his first shutout. The team then traveled to Smithtown High School. The game was also a homecoming for Coach Radcliffe, who was a player for Smithtown in the '80s. Smithtown proved to be too much for the Bulldogs and defeated the Dogs 3-0. The Hewlett match was a replay of last years County championship, which Island Trees won 1-0. Rob Saladino opened the scoring with a perfectly placed penalty kick. Hewlett responded with a late goal to tie the score at 1-1. The game finished in a tie with a lot of questions still to be answered as to who will be champions this year. The Bulldogs upcoming games are against Roslyn, Valley Stream South and Wantagh.

The Girls Varsity Soccer team opened their season with a 4-0 win over Bethpage. The defense, led by Michelle DiFede, Rosa Oliveri, Vanessa Militano, Karyn Fitzpatrick and Trish DelMonaco, held the Bethpage offense to no shots on goal. In their second game, the girls lost to Calhoun 5-2, but the score does not indicate the closeness of the game. There were 20 saves made by the Calhoun goalie and 4 posts hit by the Lady Bulldogs and numerous opportunities that were not taken advantage of. On Thursday, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Plainedge for the first time in four years, 3-2. Goals were scored by Cathy Sbarra, Kate Sciacca and Christina O'Brien. Michelle DiFede and Kelly Huldie had assists.

On Saturday, September 12, the Boys J.V. Soccer team beat MacArthur 2-0. Goals were scored by Matt Ostrowski and Kevin Bragman; this was the team's first game of the season. On Tuesday, Sept. 15, Smithtown handed the team it's first loss of the season, 3-0. Outstanding players in the game were Steve D'Ambrosio, Matt Ostrowski, Peter Condela, Tim O'Shea, Dan Donovan and Julio Barea.

The Girls J.V. Soccer team opened the season with a 5-0 loss to Bethpage. The girls didn't play badly, but tried too hard individually to do something positive instead of playing together as a team. In the second game against Calhoun, we received outstanding efforts from goalie Jessica Musumeci and solid defense from Diana Connolly, Caryn Kraus, Danielle Cama and Elena O'Brien. After a scoreless first half, Elena O'Brien scored off a corner kick. You could see the confidence level go up after the first goal and five minutes later Lauren Smath scored on a bullet shot from 18 years out into the far corner. Everyone played excellent team ball. Congratulations girls, on a job well done.
