In what appears to be an annual occurrence, someone is once again soliciting by telephone within the Wantagh Fire District. This time they are using an obscure fire organization with the rhetoric that the funds will be donated to the Wantagh Fire Department.

Although such an organization or individual might well be within their rights to phone solicit, they have no right to use the name of the Wantagh Fire Department. No funds have ever been forwarded to the fire department, nor has this fire department ever requested such action by an outside organization. It is conceivable that a solicitor could obtain some $50,000 within Wantagh, Levittown, and Seaford Harbor communities, donate $5 to the fire department, and be within their rights. Five dollars to the fire department and $49,995 in their pocket.

Information regarding this problem has been brought to the attention of the chief's office by concerned residents of the Wantagh/Levittown communities. In addition, firefighters have also received calls. When the solicitor is asked his name, phone number, address, and organization that person simply hangs up. This cannot be a legitimate organization, and is definitely not if they mention the Wantagh Fire Department.

Please be informed that the Wantagh Fire Department begins their Fund Drive in January with a direct mailing to each and every home and business within the fire district. This is followed by a second mailing about six weeks later to those who have not acknowledged the first request. Make no mistake about it, the literature and request you receive will leave no doubt in your mind that it is from the Wantagh Fire Department. In April/May, firefighters walk door to door to ask for your help if you have not contributed. They will be dressed in uniform and will carry a photo identification card.

This coming year, 1999, in addition to the annual fund drive, the Wantagh Fire Department will seek your support in celebration of its 100th Anniversary as a fire department and service to the community. They will be approaching local businesses for advertising in the Parade and Drill Anniversary Journal. In addition, the public may also contribute to show thanks and support to the fire department. Residents will be kept informed as to what is transpiring.

It is your money to do as you see fit. The department only asks that if it is your intention to donate to the Wantagh Fire Department that you make sure it is going to them. It is your prerogative to contribute, or not, and in no way will it affect the response to your home if needed.
