At a special meeting on July 15, the Levittown Board of Education adopted a resolution setting the tax levy for the 1998-99 school year. A tax levy of $53,445,779 was set for school purposes pursuant to voter approval of the school budget on May 19, 1998. The resolution also set a tax levy of $3,186,823 pursuant to the approval of the Library budget vote on April 2, 1998 by district voters, and pursuant to New York State statutes which requires school districts to set the tax levy for libraries. At this meeting the board also approved a change order for window replacement projects being completed under the bond issue. Lastly, at this Special Meeting, the board of education approved a bid appointing a food service contractor for the school lunch program for the 1998-99 school year. The food service contract was awarded to Whitsons, which has held the contract for the last five years.

At the close of the special meeting the board continued with a planning session to review and discuss a number of issues without formal action. The board reviewed a proposed schedule for the construction of additional classrooms at four of the district's elementary schools. Preliminary plans will be submitted to the State Education Department for this construction, a process which should take 6 to 12 months. The board retained the option of completing, or not completing state-approved additional classrooms pending the utilization of the Laurel Lane School building.

The board also reviewed changes in secondary school attendance zones in which a greater number of students would be attending Wisdom Lane Middle School and Division Avenue High School in order to alleviate projected overcrowding at MacArthur High School. The board should finalize these boundaries sometime in the fall.

At the planning session the board also reviewed a number of proposed changes in the purchasing and bidding process as explained by Dr. Groveman, assistant superintendent for business & finance.

Lastly, the board of education reviewed several policies for possible revision.
