The Island Trees Varsity Baseball Club had a successful week sweeping a three game series from the Manhasset Indians. The Bulldogs finished the week with seven straight league wins.
In the first game, Anthony Pena pitched seven strong innings, striking out nine as the Bulldogs won with a score of 5-3. Mike Santonocito went 2 for 3, while Mike McCave went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs that proved to be the game winners.
In the second game, Mike McCave struck out seven over seven innings as the Bulldogs won with a score of 7-5. McCave drove in the game winning RBI in the sixth inning to cap a comeback. Chris Stavros went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Ray Due went 2 for 3 and Joe Iglio had 3 RBIs. Sal DiBenedtto also went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
In the final game, Manny Lopes picked up his second win for the year with seven strong innings of eight hit ball. Mike McCave capped a strong week going 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and a straight steal of home.
The Bulldog record now stands at 8-3 in League V. They plan an important series next against the Jericho Jayhawks.
The 8th Grade Baseball team remained unbeaten with a 6-1 win over the Hicksville Comets. Michael Thompson ran his record to 2-0 with a masterpiece as he went seven innings, giving up two hits while striking out seven and allowing only one walk in a 70 pitch performance. The Comets scored one unearned run in the first before Thompson shut the door. Michael also had two hits, scored two runs and added an RBI on the day. Chris Caltabiano brought his whopping stick as he punished two balls for doubles while adding three more RBIs to his total. Chris's first shot would have easily been a home run except it hit the Hicksville track retaining wall and bounced back to the left fielder Caltabiano is leading the team with five RBIs and an .833 batting average. Matt Ostrowski contributed two hits and an RBI and sealed the victory with a tremendous play at shortstop as he went to the hole and gunned down the Comet runner. Paul Liguori had two hits and two runs scored and continued to play flawlessly behind the plate. Greg Thomson scored a run and used his speed to beat out an infield hit. Mike Santor had a hit, two stolen bases and a run scored in another good effort. Play of the Day goes to Peter Kostaras as he made a sliding catch in the outfield to rob Hicksville of at least a double. The Bulldogs continue to play aggressive baseball.
The Boys and Girls Varsity Track teams completed their season at the Divisional Finals at North Shore. Vanessa Militano, Kelly Huldie and Christine Schepmoes all ran good times and Tricia DelMonaco recorded her best time ever in the 800 meters. Joe Parker also ran well in the mile with a time of 5:22. Matt Halas ran his personal best time in the mile and half mile race. In their last high school track meet, John Di'Agostino tied his best times of the season in the 100 and 200 meter dashes and Rich Renner ran his best times ever in the 200 and 400 meters.
The Middle School Co-Ed Track team had a great meet at Hicksville. Elena O'Brien finished first in the hurdles, first in the 55 meters and second in the long jump. Jodie Schoppmann had her best time in the 1500, 5:37, taking first for the third meet in a row. Jen D'Albenzio placed third in the 800 meters. Danielle Cama placed third in the 55 meters. Melanie Hallas finished third in the 200 meters and Justin Salvage finished third in the shot put.
Congratulation to the White Softball team. They beat Berner 9-8. Excellent pitching by Kim Kapica. Great hitting for all. Kim Kapica hit a triple in the first inning, bringing in a run. Great fielding by all. Corrine Vinberg and Erin Carroll made a double play at the end of the seventh inning to win the game.
