This past Tuesday over 3,000 people came out to vote on Levittown's $92,145,987 budget and nearly 1,000 came out to vote on Island Trees' $30,224,894 budget. Both of these budgets passed by hundreds of votes.
In Levittown there were eight polling places set up for residents to vote. In each of these locations more people came out to vote for the budget than to vote against it. The final total was 1,953 votes for the budget and 1,349 votes against it. This new budget represents a tax increase of $1.85 per $100 of assessed valuation for residents. This is less than a 3.2 percent increase from last year's budget.
In Island Trees, 730 people voted for the budget and only 206 voted against it. According to the school district's budget statistics this 78 percent of yes votes is the largest percentage that a budget has passed by. Over the last five years, the percentage of votes for the budget has continually increased. Superintendent Richard Segerdahl was very pleased with the fact that this year was the second year in a row that the number of people voting against the budget was extremely low. Last year only 186 people voted against the budget and this year only 206 voted against it. According to Segerdahl this year's turnout for the vote was bigger than it has been for the last five or six years. This new budget represents a $1.93 per $100 of assessed valuation for residents. This is a 5.6 percent increase from last year's budget.
Also on the ballot for both Levittown and Island Trees was a change in transportation mileage. In Levittown this proposal passed with 1,732 votes in favor of the change and 1,296 votes against it. In Island Trees the transportation change passed with 578 votes in favor of it and 300 votes opposed to it. This vote allows both districts to decrease the transportation mileage, thus allowing more students in each of the districts to qualify for school transportation.
The budget in neighboring districts also passed with fairly high numbers. In East Meadow, 2,418 people voted for the budget while only 860 voted against it. In Wantagh there were 1,149 votes in favor of the budget and only 636 against it. In Seaford, the budget passed with 1,104 votes for it and 586 votes against it.
