The Island Trees Varsity Baseball team had a successful week taking three games from Roosevelt. In the opener Anthony Pena pitched four perfect innings while striking out 11. Greg Salvage, Pena and Tom Rizzo had multi-hit games. Joe Iglio also added a two run homer. In the second game at Roosevelt, Manny Lopes tossed a three hitter with seven strikeouts. Manny also went four for four including three doubles and 2 RBIs. On Friday, Chris Stavros went two for two with three RBIs. Tom Rizzo and Greg Salvage both added two hits apiece. Shane Brunette picked up the win, tossing four innings of no-hit ball while striking out nine. The Bulldogs are now 5-3.
The 8th Grade Baseball team battled the rain and curfew on Friday at Grand Avenue and escaped with a 7-7 tie. Chris Caltabiano pitched his heart out in a rain soaked contest. Chris went the distance allowing only two earned runs while striking out 11. He also did it with the bat, going 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Greg Thomson continued his torrid hitting with a double and 2 RBIs. Matt Ostowski had a hit and two ribbies. Jude Bewer came to the plate with the Bulldogs trailing by a run in the 6th and the possibility of the game ending right there and calmly stroked a single to center scoring Chris Caltabiano and tying the game. Outstanding effort boys.
Congratulations Island Trees Lady Bulldogs on a 15-7 victory vs. Howitt. Nice hitting and base running by Jodie Alvarez. Melissa Daucher, Colleen McGrath, Dana Rinaldi and Cheryl Werling. The winning pitcher was Jackie Thumhart. Beautiful catching by Elizabeth Dinolfo and also beautiful fielding by Ryan Ann Ezzo Erin Ludewig, Lisa Macchia and Corina Estrada.
The Middle School Track team had the first meet of the season at Wantagh. After a close battle, the Bulldogs placed third. Jodie Schoppman placed first in the 1500m with an outstanding time of 5:48. Donald Klang placed second in the 100m and Danielle Cama placed third. Jen D'Albenzio placed third in the 800. Ray Chow finished second in the 55m. and Danielle Cama also placed second. Melanie Hallas finished first in the 200m with Chelsea Marciano a close second. Jessica Fusaro was impressive in the shot put and in the long jump, placing third. Great job.
