Karen Rice is MacArthur High School's choice for the Athlete Spotlight for the Week of March 9. Karen has been a member of the Varsity winter and spring track teams for the past three years. In this, her third and final season, she had a very successful winter season by qualifying for the Nassau County Section VIII Track Meet where she competed against the best runners in Nassau County in the 4 by 100 relay team.
This spring Karen is looking forward to another successful season. Karen hopes to qualify for the county meet again in either the 400 meter, 800 meter or again in the 4 x 100 meter relay.
Off the track, Karen's accomplishments are even more impressive. Since her freshman year, Karen has been a Renaissance cardholder, has been on the High Honor Roll all four years and has maintained a 97 average. Karen had a combined score of 1160 on her SATs and as they say, "If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it." Karen is one of those people whom you would ask. During the three previous winters, Karen volunteered her time helping out Back to School Night, working in the attendance office, school store and on Levittown's 50th Anniversary celebration.
Karen is a member of the "elite" group, chosen by administrators and faculty members, known as the Peer Leader group. They are chosen because of the good example they set for the other students, for their leadership ability and because of their outstanding character.
Hard work, pride, dedication and commitment have obviously been a big part of Karen's career at MacArthur High School. Unfortunately, time moves on and we have to lose our outstanding students, such as Karen, to graduation every year. We know that her accomplishments and hard work, along with her good example, have made a positive influence on some of the younger students and there will be others to follow in her footsteps.
Next year Karen will attend either C.W. Post, Hofstra or Stonybrook and we know she will do well wherever she chooses to go.
