Sean McDermott is MacArthur High School's choice for the Athletic Spotlight for the week of Feb. 23. McDermott has played basketball for four years at MacArthur, the last two as a Varsity player. This year as a senior, his teammates elected McDermott as their captain. Last year as a junior, McDermott was named to the All-Conference team in basketball, won a Who's Who in America award, was on the Honor Roll and was a Renaissance cardholder.

As a senior, he was chosen to be a peer leader, an elite group of seniors chosen by faculty members and administrators, who serve as role models for younger students, who do volunteer work in the community and work with senior citizens who are in need of help.

McDermott not only excels on the basketball court, he excels in the classroom as well. McDermott is a solid 90 average student, is in the top third of a senior class of 220 and scored over 1,000 on his SATs.

McDermott always sets a good example for the younger students with his positive work ethic both on the court and in the classroom.

Hopefully, the basketball team will qualify for the playoffs and McDermott will be able to extend his basketball career at MacArthur for a few more games. One thing is certain, if the Generals do qualify for the playoffs, McDermott will be one of the reasons why.

No matter what the outcome is in basketball, McDermott will be missed next year. Hopefully, his good work ethic both on and off the court will be duplicated by some of the younger students whom he influenced.

Congratulations to Sean McDermott on a great high school career! We wish him well and proudly place him in the Athletic Spotlight.
