The Island Trees varsity wrestling team has just concluded a very successful dual meet season. The Bulldogs ended their 1997-98 campaign with a very respectful 8-5-2 dual meet record. This is a vast improvement over last season's five wins and 10 losses record. Their hard work and dedication led to big wins over highly touted Baldwin, Farmingdale and Valley Stream South teams. On Saturday, Feb. 14, individual Island Trees wrestlers will compete in a county qualifying tournament at Massapequa High School. The top four place winners in each weight class will receive All Conference honors. Top hopefuls are senior captains Mike Dvorznak (21-2) and Ryan Vinberg (15-4), also Sean Murphy, Jason Bates, Joe Anderson, Vinny Militano, Jim DelMonaco, Attilio Agostino and Rich Carroll.
The girls JV basketball team won their final game against Carle Place with a score of 33-22. The high scorers were Tara Berman with seven and Christina O'Brien with six. Other top scorers were Melissa Santor, Jennie Terracciano, Lauren Smath, Danielle Fusci, Mary O'Brien, Tricia DelMonaco and Eliza Zipper. A great game was played by Michelle McGowan, Meghan Voss, Sandy Baglivo, Rosa Oliveri, Kristina Ruff, Jill Bischoff and Marissa Fiorenza. The girls had a great season and they worked very hard. Congratulations girls!
The Island Trees junior varsity boys basketball team will wrap up the season against Manhasset, away. The Bulldogs (5-10) are focusing on coming out strong with a tremendous team effort. With three players injured, including captain Santiago Venegas, this game will help to develop some players for next season. After two disappointing losses at home, this team is seeking personal redemption to try and come out with a victory.
The girls red basketball team lost a close game to Mattlin. The final score was 26-23. High scorers were Lisa Smith with 14 and Erin Ludewig with nine.
The girls white basketball team played a close game that wasn't decided until the final minute. Trailing by one, the Lady Dawgs had many opportunities to take the lead, but came up short. Ashley Tonno led the scoring attack with six points and six rebounds as she played very aggressive basketball. Jodie Schoppmann played solid as usual, as she scored three, assisted with three and added seven rebounds while gliding all over the court. Elena O'Brien scored the first three points of her career and ripped down seven rebounds as she continues to improve. Defensive spark-plug Jamie Zetterberg and her lightning quick reflexes scored four, while dazzling the crowd with five steals and shooting 2-4 from the foul line. Others scoring were Elizabeth Dinolfo, Jodie Rose and Christina DeMott, all playing great two-way basketball. Keep working, girls, the improvement is starting to really show.
