Girls Varsity Basketball
Quick, fast and tough are the adjectives veteran head coach Steve Kissane uses for his Division Avenue High School girls varity basketball team, which went 10-7 last year in Conference II.
Kissane and assistant coach Debbie Lopos have five returnees and five newcomers on their squad. The veterans incolude point guard Brooke McCarthy, forward Kathryn Taraci, guard Michelle Davis, shooting guard Kelly Perno and guard Kris Williams. Newcomers include forwards Charissa Knocks and Carrie To, and center Colleen Sullivan. The team is working to improve its defense, Kissane said.
The Lady Dragons play in a competitive conference that includes Garden CIty, Elmont Memorial and crosstown rival MacArthur. "A record of .500 would be nice," he adds.
Bowling
Blue Dragons coach Joanne Byrne has a young squad this winter. The team, which last year won conference and county titles, has five returnees and five newcomers.
Coming back to the lanes for the Dragons are sophomores Kelly Suallivan and Anthony Gatterdam, ninth grader Brandon Seigal and eighth graders John Sullivan and Stephen Bailin. Newcomers include sophomores Chris Hagan, Justin Biules and Mike Martino, ninth graders John Ferretti and Darren Barlow and seventh grader Gary Shultes.
Hagan, Byrne said, "has a strong game and can strike with anyone." She added that John Sullivan, who bowled on the JV team last year, led tryouts with a 209 average and a high game of 278 (716 series).
"The team as a whole can throw a lot of strikes," Byrne said in describing the Dragons' strengths. "The team is working on adjusting to lane conditions and making spares."
