Basketball
The Island Trees Middle School boys White basketball team faced off against Bethpage on Dec. 10. After starting the game off strong, the Bulldogs found themselves down 11 points going into the final period, and could not come back, falling to Bethpage by 9.
Matt Ostrowski had another strong game, scoring 10 points. Angel Lopez and A.J. Latuputty tore down the boards on offense and put several back up for key points. Jeremy Small continued his dynamic long-range shooting, netting shots from way downtown.
Also contributing to the scoring were Chris Bitetto, Jimmy Lyons, Paul Liguori, Rich Catherall, Peter Ruff and Anthony Lombardo.
The Boys Red basketball team traveled to Seaford recently for a battle with the Vikings. Starting out sluggishly, and trailing at the half by 6, the Dawgs went on a 20-11 run over the next two periods and took a three-point lead into the final stanza. Precision shooting by Michael Thompson (10 points) and Brian Mastro (eight points), who also had four blocked shots, led the rally that preserved the Bulldogs' 40-37 victory. Damon Moore added four points and had nine assists, while controlling the tempo of the game, including a dribbling clinic over the last 30 seconds that preserved the win.
The Dawgs dominated the boards, grabbing 26 rebounds, with Norberto Carbacas (10 rebounds and six points) and Michael Fusci (six rebounds and four points) soaring above Seaford. Rob Giovi, Pete Kostaras and Julio Barea added to the scoring. Pate Iannone and Joe McCauley turned in solid defensive performances.
Volleyball
The Girls White volleyball team lost a close match to Hicksville on Dec. 8. Michelle Rivano and Corina Estrada turned in outstanding defensive plays. Ashley Tonno was the high scorer, with four ace serves.
Bowling
Leading the recent scoring for Island Trees were eighth graders Greg Thomson (226) and Jude Brewer (204). Island Trees High School students also turned in good performances, including ninth-graders Scott Kapica (214) and Lou Ann Koromi (218), 10th-grader Brett Rottkamp (256 and 236) and senior Tom Rizzo (234 and 200).
