Obituaries

James A. Miner

James A. Miner, of Levittown, died on Dec. 12, 1997, after a long illness. He was 81 years old.

Mr. Miner, a past president of the Nassau County Bar Association, was also active in church and community affairs.

He was born in Sherwood Park in Yonkers in 1916. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1938, and New York Law School in 1946. His legal education was interrupted by 4 1/2 years of service in the US Army during World War II. Prior to discharge he had reached the rank of major.

Mr. Miner began his legal career in NYC in 1946. In 1953, he opened an office in Mineola where he practiced law until he retired in 1983.

An active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Levittown for 44 years, Mr. Miner sang in the choir and served as an elder. He also served in many capacities for the LI Presbytery, including acting as attorney for many years.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Mr. Miner was active in the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, serving as chairman with the Tri-Parkway District, where he was insturmental in forming many of the Cub Scout Packs and Boys Scout Troops in the burgeoning communities in the area. he also served on the executive committee of the Boy Scouts of Nassau County.

In 1958 he served as a member of the school board for Levittown School District Five. From 1972 to 1974, he served as chairman of Fish, a community-based organization providing many services to individuals in need. Over the years, he enjoyed an active engagement with the Middlebury College Alumni Association. He was co-chair, with his wife Florence, of the 55th reunion for his class.

One of the joys of his retirement years was his summer home in St. Albans Bay, VT, on Lake Champlain, where he created a welcoming place to enjoy the visits of children, grandchildren, friends and relatives.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, Florence Hulme Miner, he is survived by his son, James A. Miner Jr. of Annapolis, MD; two daughters, Stephanie Keonig of Silver Spring, MD and Mary Grace Summergrad of Needham, MA; five grandchildren, Jesse, Lauren and Jacob Koenig and Lisa and Anna Summergrad; and a brother, Frederick Miner of Seaford, DE.

Arrangements were made by the Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home Levittown Chapel. A memorial service was held on Dec. 16 at the First Presbyterian Church of Levittown.
