L'towners Can Recycle Telephone Directories

Levittown and East Meadow residents are starting to get their 1998 white and yellow pages. Which, of course, leaves the question of what to do with the old ones.

Well, the Hempstead Town Department of Sanitation has a suggestion: Recycle them.

The town's sanitation department will collect outdated telephone books from now through next Jan. 16. Residents can bring phone books to the department facility at 1600 Merrick Rd., Merrick every day (except holidays) between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

In a statement, Councilman Richard Guardino said the collection and recycling of phone books will reduce significantly the amount of refuse that ordinarily would be incinerated, while helping the environment.

Levittown and East Meadow residents with questions about that and the other Hempstead Town recycling projects can call the recycling office at 378-2200.

Merchants Asked to Support Dance, Journal

The Levittown Chamber of Commerce will hold its 38th annual Installation Dinner Dance Saturday night, Jan. 10 at the Manor East in Massapequa.

Reservations are $50 per person, or $500 for a table of 10, which includes a free full-page ad in the journal.

The chamber also asks local merchants to support the anniversary journal. Costs are $500 for the back cover, $300 for the inside back cover or inside front cover, $225 for a gold page, $120 for an inside full page, $65 for a half page and $35 for a quarter page.

The deadline for camera-ready journal artwork is Tuesday, Dec. 23.

Those taking out advertising or making reservations for the installation party should make their checks payable to the Levittown Chamber of Commerce, Post Office Box 207, Levittown 11756. For more information, call the chamber at 520-8000.

Vocational Key Club To Assist Toy Drive

The Levittown Vocational Center Key Club will hold a special event Tuesday night, Dec. 16 to benefit the Toys for Sick Children campaign, organized by Levittown-area resident John Theissen. The event is slated for 6:30 p.m. at the Panther Room of Levittown Memorial Vocational Center on Abbey Lane.

Proceeds from the evening will be used to equip hospitals with large and small play equipment, games and various educational toys. The Culinary Arts students of Levittown Vocational Center will prepare the dinner.

After surviving a brain tumor at age 17, Theissen is giving back to other youngsters suffering from illness.

Toys for Sick Children has collected over 70,000 new toys since 1992. In addition, donations have enabled the organization to provide hospitals and child-care facilities with TVs, VCRs, video games, art and craft supplies, high chairs and strollers for their playrooms.

Toys for Sick Children will continue its holiday toy drive Dec. 13-14 and 20-21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 15 Deep Ln. in Wantagh, behind the Cherrywood Shopping Center off Duck Pond Drive.

For more information, call 796-4235 on weekdays, or 781-6349 on weekends.
