A Thankless But Important Job

(The following letter, presented by the Levittown PTA Council at the Nov. 12 School Board Meeting, was forwarded to the Trib for publication.)

If you saw an ad in the paper for a job..."Wanted---someone to work a second job. Must have flexible hours so that you can attend many meetings, some lasting until two o'clock in the morning (especially in the spring). You will be expected to make appearances in ten buildings and know what is going on in them. You will be called on to make difficult decisions, which will mean there is always at least one group of people very angry with you and you will probably be subjected to name calling in public at times. You will hear the complaints, frustrations and anger before you hear the gratitude and thanks. And most importantly, the salary for this demanding job...is ZERO." Who in the world would want to subject themselves and their families to that?

Fortunately for us, we have seven community people willing to do this and more. I think most of the community forgets that the job of a school board member is that of a volunteer. As fellow volunteers, we understand how frustrating it is to work very hard in the community and be under attack at times for trying to do what is best.

Having a good relationship with the school board is something that is very important in a community. PTA is very glad that no matter if we agree or disagree with the issues and concerns, we know that we try to do what is best for all the children in Levittown.

We would like to say "thank you" to each and every one of you for accepting this volunteer position. You deserve to be recognized.
