Wildcats Soccer Roundup: September 18, 2009

TOPSOCCER

The old adage came true once again - “it never rains on a soccer field”. The weather cooperated and our TOPSoccer Program was off to a rip-roaring start! A host of new players made their debut with the program and they were outstanding. The junior contest wound up with the Lions edging out the Ducks by a mere one goal, 4-3. Chris Cooney and newcomer Harry Owens shared the scoring honors, while Kyle Hanratty, also a new player, was super in goal. Sammy Duggan blasted away with a ton of shots for the Ducks. The seniors were in midseason form as they truly battled from the first whistle to the last. No one was backing down form the opposition in this physical challenge. The red team had three goals by another newcomer, Brett Tirado, who showed off some fine offensive moves. Matt Saraiva was a rock on defense as he stopped the green team time and again. The green team mounted their comeback in the 2nd half with goals by Stefani Egre and Robert Vittiglio but just ran out of time. Robert played an excellent first half in goal, keeping the game within reach. However, the star of the green team was defender, David Glass, who stood up to an onslaught of charges and often found himself toe-to-toe with two or three attackers, only to frustrate them as he stripped away the ball. We’re off next week for the holiday but return on September 26th. Rich Bletsch, Director

Twelve-Year-Old Merillon Patriots Win 2009 HBQVB Tournament

On Aug. 14, the Merillon Patriots defeated a tough East Williston team 6-3 to win the HBQVB Championship for the second time in three years.

The Patriots jumped ahead 1-0 on a first inning John Young home run. In the second, Brennan Scanlon, Vinny Patrey, Kyle Facibene, Matt Theodorpoulos all scored, in part, with timely hitting from Frank DeSanto and Liam Slattery. Kyle Facibene followed up his no-hit performance (Oceanside) with a well-pitched Championship game.

Kudos to Evan Clark, Joe Pagan, Jon Cioffi, Dylan Forrester, Brandon Martinez and all the boys for a well-played tournament.

A Trifecta! Girls Minors Win Championship Joining Majors/Seniors

Friday, 11 September 2009 00:00

Congratulations to the New Hyde Park Little League Girls Minors Softball Team for winning the District No. 29 Championship, becoming the first Minor Girls team from NHPLL to win the coveted District.

The girls softball program at NHPLL is becoming a local powerhouse winning the Minor, Major and Senior District Championships. The Senior Girls also won the Sectional Championship. This is the result of several years of dedicated coaches working spring, summer, fall and winter with the girls on fundamentals. The girls from New Hyde Park are exceptional at bunting, fielding, base running and most importantly, pitching. Just like the big leagues, the little league games are won with defense and pitching, and the girls from New Hyde Park have plenty of both. A special thanks to our exceptional pitching coach, Coach Monte from Queens College. Coach Monte works tirelessly with the girls year round and the results are fun to watch.
