Mineola Mustang Run Ends on Nostalgic Note

Written by Margaret Whitely Friday, 27 November 2009 00:00

On a picture perfect day, the Mineola Mustang Run, conceived by Lynn Fairgrieve and with the help of her hard-working crew, ended last Sunday after 25 successful years. The feeling by all, and there were several hundred, at the run was one of sadness and nostalgia.

NHP Lady Pumas – 3, Farmingdale Fire Balls – 2

The rain and wind of a nor’easter could not dampen the spirits of the girls as they came up big against a very good Farmingdale team en route to a much deserved 3-2 victory. The Lady Pumas continued their hot streak going 3-1-1 in their last 5 games, improving week after week. Saturday’s win was the highlight of the season to date.

Summary: NHP got on the board first about 5 minutes into the game when Cara Becker crashed in on goal, caught the Farmingdale goalie charging out, and lobbed a shot over the goalie’s head to make it 1-0. The first half ended 1-0 NHP. About 5 minutes into the 2d half, Farmingdale dashed in on goal and tied the game 1-1 - and created the makings for an exciting finish. NHP then countered with 2 quick goals of their own. Casey Sanders scored the key of goal of the game – making a beautiful spin move to spring herself into the penalty area off a long ball pass from Izzy Glennon, and then tucking a well-struck ball into the far right post for the 2-1 lead. Katie Krems then netted what would be the game winner, off a nice steal pass from Sophie Leeds that Kate put away for the 3-1 lead. Farmingdale got a goal back to make it 3-2 with about 5 minutes left in the game, but the girls held tough and did a good job playing D to preserve the victory.

State Bank Of Long Island “Cardinals”
Vs. Ridgewood Savings Bank “Angels”

It was another great outing for the mighty Cardinals who displayed both offensive power and defensive excellence against a very good Angels team today. The hitting assault was led by John Napolitano who not only just missed hitting for the cycle (single, double, triple, 1 RBI, 1 run scored), but made a great diving catch of a hard hit line drive to 3rd base. Also swinging a hot bat was Sean O’Connor (2 singles, 2 RBI, 1 run scored) and Andrew Colgan (single, double, 1 RBI, 1 run scored) who also continued to display impressive fielding skills and a tremendously strong arm in the field. Jake Glueck, who hit a single and his third double of the season, and Anthony DePompeis, who hit 3 singles, combined to drive in two runs and score another two runs. Scott Schanter displayed great range at 2nd base with a nice play of a sharply hit ball to nail the runner at 1st base and contributed offensively with a single and a run scored. Grant Joseph not only hit a single but was steady at 2nd base while Alessandro Lacerra did a solid job in the outfield and behind the plate as catcher. Kenny Gensch and Joseph Griffin each flashed the leather in the field.

Herricks High School Homecoming Follows New Route

Written by Margaret Whitely Friday, 13 November 2009 00:00

The Herricks Homecoming was a huge success under the steady hand of Herricks Director of Physical Education Jim Petricca.

Due to the ongoing construction of the new track at the high school, the field could not be used, so alternate homecoming arrangements had to be made.

Therefore, all the band, the cheerleaders and the floats made their way from the high school down to the backend portion of the Herricks Community Center.

All County Business Solutions “Braves” Vs.Bagels and A Whole Lot More Garden City “Dodgers”

In the final game of the fall season, 3 veterans on the Dodgers ball club (Cenzo Montoni, Matt Merolla and Joey Muratore) led the way. Cenzo showed off his level stroke, smacking a couple of fastballs right back up the middle for 2 base hits and 2 big RBIs. Matt displayed his ability to go deep, sending 2 shots into the left-center gap and adding 2 RBIs of his own. Joey also added an RBI and contributed by putting the ball in play and legging out a few singles with his excellent hustle. Not to be outdone, the Dodger rookies didn’t miss a beat and complemented the vets with outstanding play of their own. Danny McClellan, Steven DeRocchis, and Brian Kornreich each added RBIs and played stellar defense. Justin Yang continued to show impressive power to all fields and his defensive play led to 3 big outs. Michael Campagnuolo did an outstanding job getting on base and hustling to score 2 runs. As usual, the cousin tandem of Justin and Nick Marsala did not disappoint. Justin added a spark from the leadoff spot by getting his bat on the ball and hustling to get on base. Nick was his usual steady self, knocking in a couple of runs and making perfect throws from the pitcher’s mound over to first for outs.

All County Business Solutions “Braves” vs. Bagel & a Whole Lot More “Dodgers” It was a great game for the closing of the Fall Season. Andrew Wang turned an unassisted double play and Alessandro Gullo made spectacular grab on a line drive. Offensive stars for the Braves were Stephen Bracco with 3 hits. Ryan Wasserman, Daniel Garcia, Kenny Hirchfeld & Joshua Raziyev with 2 hits each. Garrett Roth, Eric Lyngstad Hughes & Daniel Raziyev with 1 hit each. Attilio Lamoretti also contributed to a great team effort.

Vs. Bagels And A Whole Lot More Garden City “Dodgers”

The Dodgers braved the elements and played another great game. The hitting continues to improve and was displayed with ropes to the outfield by Cenzo Montoni, Mathew Merolla, Brian Kornreich, Nicholas Marsella, Danny McCellan and Joey Muratore. Speed remains another weapon as Michael Campagnoulo and Justin Yang beat out close plays at first. The fielding continues to improve and the entire team was involved in multiple outs. Paulie DePaulis and Justin Marsella who were temporarily traded to even out the sides, kept the Braves in the game with 2 hits each and heads up play in the field.
