Wrestling Wrangles Competition

Herricks Wrestling recently held its 3rd Annual Middle School Wrestling Festival in the community center’s Muller Arena. The Clarke Rams, Oyster Bay Baymen, Locust Valley Falcons, Jericho Jay Hawks, Westbury Green Dragons, and a contingent of PSAL IS 72 Count Basie joined the hometown Soaring Eagles for some spirited mat action.

 

New Hyde Park Man A Part Of Perfection

The Freeport Arrows were undefeated in its regular Long Island Amateur Hockey League (LIAHL) season was the first seed in the state playoffs.The Arrows beat Great Neck in the first round to advance to the championship game and beat Suffolk PAL 4-3 to clinch LIAHL

 

The Arrows went on to win four straight games in the NYS Tournament.They advanced to the championship game against the Cheektowaga Warriors

The OLV School Board recently hosted the 2nd Annual Tom Hayden OLV 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament in the OLV School Gym.  The tournament, which raises funds for the OLV School Technology Program, drew 21 teams who competed in front of a full house of enthusiastic spectators.

Our Lady of Victory’s eighth-grade girls team had another excellent match over the weekend against St. Williams and sits in second-place. OLV took two out of three games, losing game one 25-23, and winning the next two games 25-11 and 25-18 respectively. Most recently player Jackie Tam had a great serving streak and won 17 straight serves.

 

Ryan Signs Intent Letter

Floral Park resident Conall Ryan and a senior at Kellenberg Memorial High School, recently signed his letter of intent to play football for Mercyhurst University. Ryan and seven of his classmates signed their individual letters of intent, each for various sports and universities, in a ceremony at Kellenberg Memorial.

Ryan played football all four of his years at Kellenberg High School.

Franklin Square residents Meaghan Rush, Julia Pusateri, Kimberly Chan, Amanda Agostino, Valley Stream residents Tyquann Walker, Adam Kapusta, Carolyn DeFranco, and Elmont residents Dranoel Truter, Yuvaraj Dhir, Vincent Agostino, and Dylan VanManen have qualified to compete at the 2013 Metropolitan Swimming Junior Olympics.  These swimmers represented the nationally ranked host team, Long Island Aquatic Club (LIAC).  Each year, LIAC sends a large squad to the junior olympics to compete for the titles as the best age group swimmers. Since 1996, LIAC has qualified 21 swimmers for the U.S. Olympic Trials. Alex DiSanto was named the Skyline Conference Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week. DiSanto, a native of New Hyde Park, made his Old Westbury debut in game one of the Feb. 24 doubleheader at Frostburg State. DiSanto pitched a scoreless ninth inning in the Panthers’ 5-2 victory to record his first save of the season. He also closed the door in Old Westbury’s 3-2 victory over Baruch on March 2.

East Williston/ Jericho team loses at states

They came together by necessity after graduation stripped of their respective rosters; hockey players from neighboring Long Island communities who were dedicated to their sport but without enough players for a team.

And so they formed the East Williston-Jericho high school club team and created an experience none of them will ever forget.  The merged team won the Nassau County championship with a perfect 18-0 season and reached the final round of the New York State Large School Division Championships in Jamestown, N.Y.

Merged squad takes county championship

When a fistful of seniors graduated last year, the hockey programs at East Williston and Jericho needed some help to continue playing. They found it in each other and the merged team won the Nassau County Championship with a perfect 18-0 season.

“They’re a great group of kids and they went on a great run,’’ coach Jon Turk said. “It’s been a dream season but you never want to say we’re satisfied until it’s over.’’
