Braves vs. Padres, May 3

The Dr. Barbaro Podiatry Padres took on Dominick’s Deli Braves on a sun-drenched Sunday afternoon. Hunter Dunn, Jake Gruosso, and Julian Dewitte laced three straight singles to start the home first for the well-oiled Dr. Barbaro Podiatry Padre machine. Solid hits were contributed by Thomas Vieni, Trevor Boshnack, and Ben Harnick. Michael O’Grady clobbered the second Padre double of 2013 into left center. In the field Stephen Coffey, Chris Erxelben, and Stephen Lopez provided amazing glove work.

Simply because something has happened or reoccurred several times in the past does not make it a tradition, something to be expected maybe, or something habitual perhaps. Tradition is different. It evokes a feeling of long-standing preplanned positive experiences built in layers upon one another.


So it is, apparently, with the Highlander Wrestling program. Year after year, young men and women graduate from the high school program only to return again as alumni freely lending their expertise, assistance and support . . . giving back to those who have not yet entered the fraternity of Highlander Wrestling Graduates.

NHPLL Girls Snippets

Mathnasium faced off with the tough Valley Stream team on May 4 and ended in an 8-8 tie. Paige Jones lead the pitching crew  with four innings, giving up one earned run and five unearned. Claire Mikowski came in to close with bases loaded the score was 6-8 and Valley Stream’s leadoff batter at the plate. Mikowski struck out one and the second batter hit a line drive through the SS Sophia Kasimatis to bringing in the tying run when the umpire called the game due to time limit restrictions.

Braves 18, Royals 11

The Dominic’s Deli Braves beat the Royals 18-11. The Braves had their first scoreless defensive inning of the year in the first inning as they got great defensive plays from Michael Paladino, John Stanko and Alan Sikora. Ethan Goldberg had five hits and paced the offense with four runs scored and Bryan Ho added three runs. Alan Sikora led the Braves with four RBIs while Christian Flynn, Taranpreet Kaur and Vincent Woll contributed with three RBIs each. 


Reva Energy LLC Royals vs Dominick’s Deli Braves

 The Reva Energy LLC Royals squared off Sunday, April 21 against the Dominick’s Deli Braves. Jonathan “Scuitch”Squicarino and A.J. Ponzoled the way with four hits. Bobby Symanski, Angelo Malandruccolo and Charlie Newburg each scored three runs a piece. Sal and Sam Giangrande each had hits. Eddie Dunn, Nicholas Gregory and Andrew McWilliam all had hits and hustled on the base paths. 


Herricks Star Named County Player Of The Year

“She is a good athlete, but not exceptional. I don’t think she was the fastest girl on the court in any game or practice she played in.” So said Herricks Girls” Basketball Head Coach Glenn Lavey about senior Lady Highlander Alison Ricchiuti.


Ricchiuti has been named Nassau County Player of the Year by both the Nassau County Coaches Association and by Verizon FIOS.

The Special Olympics recently held its 8th Annual Basketball Tournament at the New Hyde Park Memorial High School. The Knights of Columbus, of New Hyde Park, has been hosting this tournament for these special kids from the very beginning.


It was a good day for basketball and the New Hyde Park Knights came ready to play and do their best. In the opening ceremonies, The Knights of Columbus came dressed in their finest and the participants where excited and ready to play.


Gladiators’ Season Rolls On

The New Hyde Park Gladiators recently played Floral Park to a 1-1 tie after 9 innings of play.  The game was called due to darkness.  Nicholas Perrone went 5 1/3 innings and Brendan Parnell threw 3 innings in relief. 


Reed Schweitzer, Paul Reo and Anthony Vaglica had two hits in the contest. In the next game against Glen Cove, the Gladiators lost 4-3 behind the pitching efforts of Ryan Sheridan.


Coach of the Year

The Merillon Athletic Association 2013 Joe Roy Coach of the Year Award was presented to Jim Shanter, Vice President of Little League by Merillon President Joe Renta at the league’s parade day festivities on April 6.


Shanter began his Merillon career in 1974 as an infielder on the Minors Division championship team sponsored by the former Franklin National Bank and remained in the league through 1976.  He returned to Merillon in 2007, coaching his son Scott in the Lower Farms Division and has since gone on to manage teams in every division of its Little League program with this being his final year in the Majors Division.

The Davenport Press Restaurant o   n Main Street in Mineola hosted the Herricks Wrestling Team, this time for the team’s 37th Annual Wrestling Awards Dinner. High School Highlanders and Middle School Soaring Eagles resplendent in jacket and tie together with family, friends, and Highlander Wrestling alumni shared a festive evening’s celebration of this year’s wrestling endeavors.


Varsity Head Coach Cliff Forziat together with his staff consisting of Mike Miller, Eric Goldberg, Leo Kouroupos, and Seth Cook, introduced each team member and distributed certificates of participation and letter awards. Special clinicians Fred Holle and Clint Bodo were also on hand, having contributed substantially to the success that the young wrestlers achieved during the season as well as adding to the spirited banter.


Little League Season Kicks Off

The New Hyde Park Little League Parade snaked through the village Saturday, April 6, kicking off start of the 2013 season. American Legion Post 1089 and VFW Post 8031 led the parade.

The plethora of youngsters wearing their team uniforms as they marched behind their team banners started from Applebee’s on across from Village Hall, headed west on Jericho Turnpike before turning south on Covert Avenue to

Stewart Avenue and arriving at Nuzzi Field where they lined up just off of the infield for the opening day ceremony.
