The Mayor’s Corner: July 17, 2009

Thank you to the Williston Park Fire Department for hosting our

Annual 4th of July parade through our Village of Williston Park. Trustee Darmstadt, Deputy Mayor Smith and Legislator Rich Nicolello joined me in marching through town. Thanks to all of our residents who came out to view a great parade. Happy Birthday to our wonderful USA.

Our library’s summer reading program has begun. Contact the library for further information on their great programs planned for the summer. Swimming lessons at the pool have begun also. Please stop by the pool office for schedules and further information.

Condolences to the family of former village trustee and local attorney Tom Ford who passed away recently. He will be missed.

On a happier note, Congrats to Assemblyman Tom McKevitt and his wife Samantha, on the birth of their daughter, Meagan Emma, born July 7. She was welcomed home by big brother Connor, all are doing fine.

All residents were sent a copy of the holiday garbage schedule in the Village Green this past May. It is also available online. It is your responsibility to follow our village regulations and schedule. There were many phone calls to village hall from people not aware that there was a holiday schedule in effect for last week, complaining and wondering why their garbage was not picked up. Please be aware of your village’s schedule. You may also obtain a copy of the holiday garbage schedule at village hall.

We are awaiting final approval on our latest road project for portions of the north side of the village. Residents will be notified when the work will begin. Unfortunately with the situation in Albany, our process has slowed down even more and we patiently await word. We are following up every possible avenue for additional funding as we await our “shovel ready” projects to begin. This latest road project is 4 years in the making and we look forward to actually beginning road work when the NYS DOT gives us the go ahead. I want all residents to know that a priority for me has been finding ways to repair and repave our roads without having to raise taxes dramatically to do so. The saying “a million dollars a mile” is quite true. We have been notified that we are not eligible for the latest “stimulus” funding we have applied for from the federal government and that our state requests are on hold, pending resolution of the situation in Albany. Yet, the process continues and my staff is actively pursuing all other sources.

A reminder for our residents and pool patrons: Please be respectful and careful when leaving and entering the Broad Street gate to our pool. Slow Down. Be Safe, Not Sorry!

Our next Village of Williston Park Board meeting will be on Monday July 20 at 8 p.m.

Please be careful when driving around town and follow all posted signs. Slow down and please stop fully at stop signs.

The village website is: See you around Town!
