The New Hyde Park community, as well as music students and teachers across Long Island, lost a prominent businessman and a cherished friend. Thomas Catalano Jr., general manager of Catalano Music, passed away at the age of 54 after a valiant battle with cancer on Feb. 14.
Tom worked as the general manger of his father’s music store, Catalano Music, for 32 years. Despite his diagnosis of multiple myeloma in February of 2013, and the aggressive nature of his disease, he continued to work until August 2013.
Tom was a gifted musician, who first learned guitar at the age of 16, and then continued his passion for guitar and music for the rest of his life. He arranged a Christmas book that was published, and even though it has been out of print for some time, some guitarists have used his arrangements as recently as this year.
Throughout the course of his illness, Tom remained positive and tried to live his life to the fullest. In addition to being a wonderful son to Marjory and Thomas Sr, and brother to Karen and Joseph, he was a loving husband to his wife of 32 years, Peggy and an adoring father to sons Michael and Christopher, and daughter, Patricia. He was a dedicated family man who spent countless hours with his sons in Boy Scouts, and attended all of his daughter’s concerts and inspired her to follow in his musical footsteps. Patricia loves playing the flute, and thanks to her Dad, is pursuing her dreams as performer.
Tom will be dearly missed. Rest in peace.
