Candidates Announce for Town Receiver of Taxes

Incumbent Democrat Charles Berman Is Being Challenged by Republican Jane Centrella

Charles Berman

The candidate issued the following statement.

“Charles Berman was originally appointed to the office of Receiver of Taxes in 2003 and January 2010, and was elected in November 2010.

“Berman is a proven government affairs professional with a solid administrative background in business. His career in public service began when he was appointed Deputy Town Clerk for the Town of Oyster Bay in 2000.

“In August of 2003, he was appointed North Hempstead Receiver of Taxes to succeed Ann Galante. He was responsible for the collection and distribution of all county, school, general, and special district taxes within the Town of North Hempstead.

“Berman implemented the first “lockbox” system for a Receiver of Taxes in Nassau County. This allowed tax payments to get deposited into the bank within 24 hours after being received at the post office and resulted in a much more efficient operation. It also increased interest income for the town that helped to reduce tax levies.

“In 2004, he was appointed to serve as Assistant to the Chairman of the Nassau County Board of Assessors. There he served as the chairman’s liaison to all divisions within the department. In 2009, Charlie was promoted to Director of the Assessment Assistance Division and helped to direct community services programs for the department and supervised a professional staff of over 30 clerical and call-center personnel and field assessors.

“Before his life in public office, Berman was the Executive Vice President of Berman Agency, Inc. a family owned insurance brokerage firm. Prior to that he was the Director of Operations of Pandick Technologies, Inc., a division of Pandick Press. He received his bachelor’s degree from SUNY Albany.

“Berman grew up in Nassau County and has been a resident of Roslyn Heights since 1988. He has long been active in his community and in his Temple. He served as Brotherhood President from 1995 to 1998 and as President of Temple Sinai of Roslyn from 2005 to 2007. During his tenure as president, Temple Sinai successfully completed the largest renovation and building project in its history.

“Berman has been married for more than 28 years to Lisa Berman who is a distinguished actress and singer in community theatre on Long Island. They are the proud parents of three children. Jeremy, a graduate of Northwestern University and Teachers College, Columbia University, is a secondary social studies teacher, Rebecca, a sophomore at Penn State, and Ben, a 10th grader at Roslyn High School.”

Jane Centrella

The candidate issued the following statement.

“Jane Centrella, a seasoned accountant and business person with more than 21 years of experience in her field, is seeking the office of Receiver of Taxes for the Town of North Hempstead on the Republican ticket.

“Centrella has spent most of her life in North Hempstead, growing up in Manhasset Hills and now living with her husband Paul and son Nicholas in North New Hyde Park. She is active in her local Civic Association and has taken a leading role fighting for important issues in her community such as stopping Accessory Housing legislation from being pushed down to the people of North Hempstead, opposing poorly thought out zoning changes such as plans to bring a Lowes Home Improvement store to an already congested two lane access area of New Hyde Park and working with the Nassau County Police Department to stop a wave of break-ins and burglaries targeting residents of New Hyde Park and Manhasset Hills.

“Centrella is a graduate of St. John’s University and earned her MBA in Accounting from Adelphi University. Jane has worked for many Fortune 500 companies including Arthur Andersen International, Merrill Lynch, American Standard and Robert Half International. Jane has also worked for startup companies such as where she built their accounting department and project managed major initiatives such as the implementation of Oracle Financials.

“She wants to bring her wealth of accounting experience, her strong work ethic and her belief that effective government must not only be efficient but also must always focus on the needs and priorities of the community to the position of Receiver of Taxes for North Hempstead in the upcoming November 8 election.”
