The graduates, their family and friends all gathered at Hofstra to attend the graduation of The Class of 2011 of New Hyde Park Memorial High School.
The students looked splendid in their blue and white caps and gowns and the entire event was pleasant in the air-conditioned venue. A few years ago, Memorial graduation switched its graduation venue from the Memorial football field because there were times when it was so hot that parents and grandparents suffered as they sat in the hot sun, not to mention the graduates in their caps and gowns.
It was a poignant moment for Sewanhaka Central School Superintendent Warren Meierdiercks because he is retiring and this was his last graduation speech after many years of dedicated service.
The New Hyde Park/Garden City Park School Board President Ernest Gentile along with Trustees David DelSanto and Joan Romagnoli were all on hand on the dais to salute the graduates.
Both Valedictorian Amanda Lesar and Salutatorian Thomas Cambell gave very reflective speeches, and they, too, were on the dais.
