Herricks School District Preps for Budget Re-Vote

Written by Geoffrey Walter Friday, 11 June 2010 00:00

It’s rare to see the small cafeteria of Center St. school filled for a June meeting of the Herricks Board of Education.  Following the one-vote defeat of the May 18 budget vote, it was easy to see why residents turned out last Thursday night to hear the latest news regarding what the board had planned for the revote which is less than five days away.

Budget Revote

Board President Richard Buckley announced that the school board learned that the state had approved a retirement incentive for “all its workers,” but little exact information is available.

Both the Village of New Hyde Park and Williston Park hold very impressive Memorial Day Parades every year and this year was no exception.

Fortunately, the weather was picture-perfect on both days, albeit warmer on Monday, but not a drop of rain in sight.

Your coverage of the town meeting called by North Hempstead Town Councilman Ferrara and Councilwoman Seeman regarding the proposed rezoning of the property on Herricks Road and Wilson Boulevard from the current “residential” to “commercial” was most informative.

Having attended the meeting and being a resident very near the property under discussion, I find the issues and opposing points of view very interesting but also very self-serving.

Herricks School Budget Fails by Just One Vote

Written by Margaret Whitely Friday, 28 May 2010 08:50

Whoever has said, “Oh, my one vote doesn’t count, ” was proven very wrong when the Herricks School Budget was defeated on May 18 by just one vote.

As the numbers were tabulated from one voting machine to the next it was fairly obvious that the number of positive votes were just not there.  Therefore, everyone relied on the absentee ballots to put them on the plus side, but after all was said and done, it was just one absentee vote of no that defeated the budget.

Written by Margaret Whitely Friday, 21 May 2010 00:00

At the last New Hyde Park/Garden City Park school board meeting, parents at the Garden City Park School expressed frustration, disappointment and anger at what they said was a lack of a timely response by administrators to an incident at the school when it is alleged that a male 6th grade student attacked a male classmate, also in the 6th grade.

According to the report of the police, and the parent of the child who was allegedly attacked, who was present and spoke at the meeting, the accused student removed his shirt, wrapped it around his classmate’s neck and then threatened him by holding a pair of scissors to his neck.
