Roslyn Road home pummeled by trees, high winds

Michelle Dos Santos wanted to go to the bank. The Roslyn Road resident got just halfway down the street when a rogue storm wrung out a sopping wet towel in Mineola to the tune of heavily flooded streets, downed power lines and uprooted trees on Wednesday, Aug. 15. She was with her two children when the storm hit.

Dos Santos made it home just in time when the booms began. What started out as light rain continued with thunderous roars from the skies above, lightning strikes and treacherous roads not easily navigated. Second Street, just east of Roslyn Road, went from street to sea in a matter of minutes.

Michael Lennon Named One Of Top Swimmers In Nation

At the last Herricks School Board meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Deirdre Hayes, announced that Michael Lennon, a 2012 graduate of Herricks High has been named one of the top 100 swimmers in the nation.

Dr. Hayes also announced that the Summer Recreation Program has ended and it was very successful with everyone in the program learning a lot and having a very good time. Board president Christine Turner said she enjoyed watching the music video program and that it was a very nice touch.

Little League Girls Compete In World Series

One of six American teams participating in the 10-team Little League Softball World Series, the New Hyde Park All-Stars are the first Long Island team to participate in this tournament since 1993. New Hyde Park continued its run with an 11-4 first round win over Asia-Pacific on Thursday, Aug. 9 that found the All-Stars banging out nine hits as the team from Makati, Philippines made eight errors.

Williston Park Holds Special Water Meeting

Dvirka and Bartilucci issue revised report

The Village of Williston Park held a special water hearing on Aug. 6 to discuss the revised report of engineers Dvirka and Bartilucci.

The main reason for the meeting was to report on the revised report and to announce an adjusted rate for the water supplied to the Village of East Williston.

Scaturro Won’t Endorse Becker, Will Run On Conservative Line

Becker says a vote for Scaturro is a vote for McCarthy

Frank Scaturro had been mum on whether he’d pursue another run for Congress after winning the Conservative Party primary as a write-in candidate over Nassau County Legislator Francis X. Becker by a 259-213 vote margin on June 26. Becker took the Republican primary 6,836 to 5,531 over Scaturro.

The New Hyde Park resident put the speculation to bed on Aug. 1. Standing on the steps of the Nassau County Supreme Court Building in Mineola, Scaturro, 40, announced his intention to run on the Conservative Party line against incumbent Democrat Rep. Carolyn McCarthy.

Project SAFEGuard Being Introduced To Local School Districts

The project addresses enhanced emergency preparedness

On Thursday, July 27, officials at Morrelly Homeland Security Center in Bethpage hosted Project SAFEguard, an educational program that will be rolled out to local school administration. It is a program of the Applied Science Foundation for Homeland Security (ASFHS), a member of the Long Island Forum for Technology (LIFT) family of companies.

Project SAFEguard is a program developed in response to New York State’s regulations, including the “Safe Schools Against Violence in Education Act” (SAVE) and revised regulations of the commissioner of education mandating schools to have sound safety plans.

Senator Martins Holds Roundtable, Press Conference

Discusses budget, MTA, I-STOP and unfunded mandates

Coming into the final four months of his current term as senator of the 7th Senate District, Jack Martins sat down with Anton Community Newspapers editors on Wednesday, July 25. He will seek re-election in November, facing off against Manhasset Democrat Daniel Ross.

Martins “tipped his hat” to Governor Andrew Cuomo concerning initiatives including the new 2 percent tax cap, a timely budget process, the states dealings concerning the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) and state school district issues, most notably unfunded mandates.

Herricks Adds Classes To Accommodate Registration

Increased class size determining factor

At the last meeting of the Herricks School Board the board announced that they would be adding classes in several of the schools to accommodate the increased registration in those grades.

The board will add an additional section to the Denton Avenue School fifth grade. Also, another section will be added to the Center Street School fifth grade. Plus, they will add another second grade to the Searingtown School.

Inspector Sean McCarthy Speaks At New Hyde Park Village Board Meeting

After a few months of constant concern from New Hyde Park residents, Inspector Sean McCarthy, commanding officer of the Nassau County Third Precinct, was the guest speaker at last week’s village board meeting to address the concerns of residents.

Before opening the floor to the public, Inspector McCarthy provided a brief report regarding crime in the area and provided an update on the precinct. First, McCarthy reported that the Third and Sixth precincts have been combined and are now both under his command. While some residents expressed concern over this, McCarthy went on to explain that the combining of the precincts allows for a continuity of leadership and access to more P.O.P. (Problem Oriented Police) cops.

New Hyde Park Village Board Summer Update

Following a presentation by Inspector Sean McCarthy of the Third Precinct, the New Hyde Park Village Board conducted their regular monthly meeting.

For reference, the New Hyde Park Village Board only meets once a month during the summer months. These meetings take place on the third Tuesday of each month at 8 p.m. in the New Hyde Park Village Hall. The next meeting will take place on August 21st.
