At the last New Hyde Park/Garden City Park School Board Meeting the board opened up the evening by awarding various students certificates for their many accomplishments.
Those honored included: Grand Prize Winner for the CAPS (Child Abuse Prevention) Month Bully Prevention Poetry Contest-Emily Park, a fourth-grader at the Garden City Park School.

County Individual Third Place Winner-Casey Durant, Garden City Park-sixth grade.

The next item on the agenda, after the general acceptance of the minutes and acceptance of the treasurer's report was the report from the superintendent, Dr. Regina Cohn.
Dr. Cohn went over, for the last time the budget proposal and then the board voted on it.
In the interim, the budget has been passed by the residents along with the passage of the Hillside Library budget and the Sewanhaka Central School High School Budget that includes New Hyde Park Memorial High School.
The board then approved the tenure of the following teachers:

Bridget Balducci, Special Education
Shanthi Sekaran, Elementary School
Dominique Dunn, Elementary School
Heather Mancuso, Elementary School
Jessica Bambala, Elementary School
Amaris Price, Elementary School
Jana Goldstein, Elementary School
Shannon Serchak, Elementary School
A one-year probationary teacher, two and one-half year probationary teacher and a three-year probationary teacher were also appointed, but no names were provided.
There was a resignation of a substitute teacher, but that name was not provided and there was an appointment of an emergency conditional substitute teacher. No name provided.
A school nurse resigned, no name provided and a substitute school nurse was appointed. No name provided.
There was a probationary groundskeeper and a probationary cleaner appointed. No names were provided for either position.
Board Policies
The following board policies were accepted: No. 3520-Emergency School Closings. It was also pointed out, by trustee Ernie Gentile, that after the Connect Ed System is installed, this policy will have to be revisited.
Board Policy No. 6140-Health Examinations, it was the first reading and it was adopted.
It was also approved that Policy No. 4214 entitled Physical Examination be accepted for adoption.
It was also voted on that the old policies that have been updated for the last two years be rescinded.
The BOLD Systems Training was discussed. The BOLD System was used for the recent election and the school board clerk and all the workers had to be apprised and trained of all the new election books.
The board also approved the upcoming self-sustaining Summer Recreation Program and the appointment of the employees that will be needed for the program. No names were given.
A New Hyde Park Road School student was awarded $1,000 for submitting a question that no one was able to answer on the TV show, Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? The money he won will be used for a computer for the New Hyde Park Road School. The student will be honored at the June meeting and based on the request of trustee David Del Santo he will present the question to the members of the board to see if he can stump them.
The Hillside Grade School PTA received donations for the sixth grade trip and there were two donations from the Garden City Park Civic Association for use at the Garden City Park School,
The board also approved a contract issued to the outgoing district treasurer Christine DiCastro to train the new treasurer Lori Carrick and at the same time the board voted on the new contract given to the new district clerk Lori Carrick.
The board approved and will sign a contract with Harbor Day Care for it to teach the Universal Pre-Kindergarten for the district children.
So impressed with the fifth grade students that New York State Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt arranged for a bus and will pay for it to transport those students to Albany to tour the capitol and his offices.
There was a long discussion by the board regarding a revote on the budget or not, in case the budget is not approved. However, since the budget was approved the entire conversation is moot.
Since there were no comments from the public, the board adjourned its meeting for executive session. The next New Hyde Park/Garden City Park School Board meeting will be held on June 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Manor Oaks School.
