Once again the weather turned out much better than forecasted and week 2 was outstanding. The juniors continue to show great improvement. Andrea Cellucci, Danny Barber, Justin Almonte, Nick Mininson and Sebastian Pinto all managed to find the back of the net for the Tigers. The Dogs and Cats rebounded with 2 goals each by Charlie Hinz and Christina Kerwin. The fifth goal was scored by Liam O'Brien to tie the match at 5-5. The seniors played against the coaches and squeaked out a 4-3 victory. Goals by Matt Saraiva, Andrew Abberton, Stefani Egre and Billy Russo withstood a late charge by the coaches who just ran out of time. Debbie Chin made a game-saving stop late in the game to ice the win. She may have blinded the opposition with her stylish shades, who knows. Excellent refereeing made it an enjoyable morning. Our young coaches were in top form as they buddied up with some of the athletes to assist them in honing their soccer skills.

The Lightning got on the board first when RF Kaitlyn Krems got a hold of a loose ball in front of goal and sent in home to make it 1-0 about 10 minutes into the first half. LF Jordyn Seagul applied relentless pressure from the left side, and just missed on 2 scoring chances on plays set up by Striker Sophia Leeds and Isabel Ugolini. Sophia recorded 2 assists and Kaitlyn netted 2 goals [to give her a hat-trick for the day] en route to the 3-1 final score. The Defense was rock solid with Bethany Ambrosio holding down the Center and aggressively coming up to set up the offense. Jessica Goldstein on right D did the same and contributed to several scoring chances down the right wing. Dylan Sanders and Kasey Borduas did a very nice job on left D clearing balls wide and then up the sideline. Casey Sanders did a find job at center midfield distributing the balls to the forwards and then took her turn in goal where she made 2 nice saves. Marisa Menist did super on Left Forward, showing good skills dribbling the ball and making passes. All in all, a very nice effort with some super passing and nice follow-up on the scoring chances. Kristin Granieri and Sophie Michaels, we missed you!

Panthers vs. Lightning

With the weather being unpredictable, the only thing that was certain was that the game between the Panthers and the Lightning would be exciting. The Lightning opened up the scoring in the game and were threatening to score early and often, but thanks to some heads up goal keeping by Ciara Lennon and the defensive play of Ally Petricca, Bonnie Charles and Mackenzie Griffin, the Panthers held the High potent Lightning offense to one goal in the first half. With the ball deep in Panther territory, Kelsey Nathan passed the ball to an open Deirde Lynch, who drilled the ball into the right side of the goal to tie the score at one at the half. In the second half of play, the Lightning scored two goals late in the game, but Hannah Dienstag made several diving saves to keep the Lightning from extending their lead. Natalie Giordano and Ciara McGreevy literally covered the entire field, playing both offense and defense in the second half of play. Both teams hustled for the duration of the game and treated us to some fine soccer.

NHP Jaguars vs. Manhasset

Although the sky was overcast with a threat of a storm, the NHP Jaguars were certainly not under the weather on Saturday. The team played hard as the parents cheered the players on from the side lines. The Jaguars were down a goal at half time, the team pushed harder in the second half. It was the pass from Christopher Pun to Andrew Curcio that gave the Jaguars the opportunity to tie the game at 1-1 in the second half with a beautiful goal by Curcio. With the game tied at 1-1 at the end of the second half, the Jaguars were roaring in overtime play, determined to keep the opponents on their toes. Within the first minute of overtime, the Jaguars forward, Roy Cunha, led the Jaguars to victory with an unassisted goal. What a great 2-1 win for the team, which locks in two wins in the Waldbaums Cup play. The Jaguars defense was so tight, the opponent was only able to score one goal and goalie Daniel Flori saved several more. The boys are all team players and show respect for one another on the field.
