I take issue with Ms. Chambers' statement that "this community bonded to save the traditions that this community was based upon." Ms. Chambers may have bonded with like-minded people, but speaking for myself, I neither agree with the outcome of this concert naming incident nor with the manner in which it was "debated."
In order for a community to truly bond, everyone must feel that their voices are heard, their concerns respected, and their feelings considered. Based on angry letters in the Illustrated, and dismissive responses at board of education meetings over the course of this controversy, I believe that we fell short in our responsibilities to each other as neighbors.
Civil discourse characterizes a strong community. The loudest people are not always right, nor do they speak for everyone. We must strive to listen to each other, even when we disagree. Now, that would be a bonding experience.
