All the schools opened last week and they did so without any problems. At the New Hyde Park/Garden City Park schools it was the first time that the Kindergarten students started on the same day and at the same time as the rest of the classes and it seemed to work well, without a hitch and with few, if any tears.
At the Herricks High School the Peer Connector program was marvelous. The seniors, who were on board to help the freshman, wore T-shirts that made them easily identifiable and as they arrived at school they seemed only too happy to be part of this peer program.
At Memorial High School the freshman start in the 7th grade and they, too, have been given lots of information prior to the first day of school. They have been taken through the school many times and have become familiar with the classes they will be attending. Just in case they get lost all the upper classmen are on the lookout for the freshman and are only too willing to help them adjust to their new surroundings.
All in all things went off very smoothly in both school districts and they are all set on a course of learning for another year.
