Merillon 8's, 5 Vs. HBQVB,

The 8's completed their series with HBQVB and won with timely hitting, solid defense and strong pitching. Christian Carrick's double to right was one of many big hits for the 8's. Joey Dunn's single knocked in a run in the big 4th inning rally. Peter Restivo kept the rally alive with a walk and Vincent Rossello notched a big RBI. The defensive was solid, Gregory Donovan's nifty back hand play at short helped stop a potential rally. Yanni Rigo's nailed a would be base stealer, also to stop a rally. Anthony Verde, Matty Lorandini and Anthony Lanzilotta all gave good at-bats and fine play on the field. The strong pitching again was handled by Gregory Haynes 4 innings 2 runs and Tommy Murphy 2 innings and 1 run.

Merillon Patriots, 6 Vs. Manhasset 2

The Merillon Patriots received another well pitched game today from John Young and Vinny Patrey plus outstanding defensive play from the boys. In a rematch of Merillon's first District level game, the boys faced one of their toughest opponents of the summer. Unlike that first game the Patriots scored first and never relinquished the lead. On a night when our clutch hitter (Young) was intentionally walked twice, Liam Slattery, Brandon Martinez, Adeel Bari, Evan Clark & Frank DiSanto came up with key hits and/or walks that allowed them to score 1 run in the second and 2 in the third. With the score 3-2 entering the fifth inning the Patriots touched up Manhasset pitching for 1 walk and 3 hits that allowed 3 runs to score to make it 6-2. Defensive gems squashed several rallies and prevented Manhasset scoring more than 2 runs. Take for example, Liam Slattery's sensational catch of a line drive shot hit to right center field or Brandon Silva's catch of a deep fly ball to right field. In the fifth inning, with Manhasset players on first and second base, Merillon's 3rd baseman (Young) stabbed a hard hit ground ball, touched third and threw to first for an inning ending, rally killing, double play. In the sixth inning, Evan Clark applied a tag at home on a Manhasset player who tried to score on a ball hit to third. The boys now have a record of 10-3 for this summer.
