The New Hyde Park North Lions Club recently held its annual installation of officers at The Inn at New Hyde Park. Incoming President Diana Biehayn was installed and outgoing President Pat Simons presented a number of awards.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of women as Lions. In 1987, after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that excluding women from service clubs was discriminatory, Lions International officially opened up membership to women, and the New Hyde Park North Lions club was started. The club will celebrate its 20th Anniversary in September. Today 17.5 percent of all Lions are women.
Some of the service projects that club members have participated in this past year and will continue next year: A visit to the Ronald McDonald House was organized by Dolores Carolan where members prepared a roast beef dinner for the families staying there. Every Thursday a member distributes food through Meals on Wheels to those in need. Club members donated about a 1,000 pairs of eyeglasses this year for recycling and distribution. Cornea transport information is distributed by Ethel Sakowich and Joan Roth. The club has long been a supporter of the Interfaith Nutrition Network also referred to as the INN. Nancy Kribs collects clothes, toiletries and bedding donations from members and then delivers them. Pat Simons and Doris Nuzzi drive people in need of transportation to doctor's appointments for the organization called FISH. Our Community Service award in the amount of $500 was presented to Solange Badano of New Hyde Park Memorial High School to assist a graduating senior with college expenses.
