North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman was on hand to sound the starting gun. He was with North Hempstead Town Councilman Thomas Dwyer. The town was the sponsor for the event.
The Duathon consisted of the regular 5-Mile Run, a 10-Mile Bike ride followed by 2-Mile Run. Quite a few hearty folks engaged in the Duathon which was won by Hans Parrado, of New Hyde Park, whose total time was 1:19:58. Joshua Rayman finished just before him, but he ran as a team with his brother Graham who ran the 5-Mile Run and then Joshua did the bike stint and the last 2-miles.
The first finisher in the 5-Mile Run was the wheelchair racer Peter Hawkins with a time of 25:12, followed by Dan McGirk with a time of 26:20. The woman finisher in the 5-Miler was Sandra Kolar with a 32:45 time.
The two who took the New Hyde Park finishing honors were Joseph Weiss and Suzanne Gomez.
Most of the members of the New Hyde Park Runners Club, under the direction of President Harold Axelrod, were very busy as volunteers, both out on the course and back at the school where they registered last-minute runners and cut up oranges and bagels.
