According to detectives an 81-year-old resident of New Hyde Park was operating a 1991 Ford, traveling westbound on Hillside Avenue, Williston Park, with two passengers, when the vehicle entered the eastbound lanes and ultimately struck a utility pole, in the Wendy's parking lot, west of Burkhart Avenue.
The driver, her daughter, who was occupying the front passenger seat and an unidentified female, age 91, occupying the rear passenger seat were all transported to Winthrop University Hospital, Mineola, where the 91-year-old victim was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m. Both the driver and her daughter were admitted to the hospital in serious condition. The occupants were exacted from the car by the Williston Park Fire Department who used the "jaws of life" to free them.
The vehicle was impounded from the accident scene for safety checks. No charges have been filed. Detectives report that the sun glare may have been a contributing factor in the accident. The investigation is continuing.
