Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system (the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord). It is known as the "Prime of Your Life Disease." There is no cure! It is thought to be an autoimmune disorder. This means the immune system incorrectly attacks the person's healthy tissue. MS can cause blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, paralysis, blindness, severe pain and more. These problems may be permanent or may come and go.
We have put together a team for the MS Walk at Jones Beach on May 6 and are asking our friends for their help to combat this disease.
Why We Fight MS
Having multiple sclerosis means that you may not be able to walk when you wake up. Or that you may suddenly have impaired vision. Or that your memory will fail you for no apparent reason. The symptoms of MS are different, and devastating, for everyone - the only certainty is that it will affect yet another person every hour of every day.
Why We Will Walk
We have registered for the MS Walk because we want to do something for the people who have been diagnosed and because we want to do everything to prevent more people from learning what it means to live with this disease. Today, there is no cure for multiple sclerosis, and with a diagnosis occurring most frequently between the ages of 20 and 50, many individuals face a lifetime filled with unpredictability.
Why You Should Sponsor Us
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society will use funds collected from the MS Walk to not only support research for a cure tomorrow, but also to provide programs which address the needs of people living with MS today. Because we choose to walk for those who sometimes can't, and because we choose to donate to the MS Walk, we are getting closer to the hour when no one will have to hear the words, "You have MS." Please join our team or sponsor us at: www.nmssli.org Please follow links to 2007 walk, click Donate/Pledge on top of page to find participant, then click on TEAM HOPE - make certain you see one of our names. We are the only Team Hope in New York. If you would like to send a check, please make it payable to the National MS Society with Team Hope in the memo section and send it to the attention of either: Michele Chambers at 71 Atlantic Avenue, Garden City Park, NY11040 or Pam Naso at 28 Old Broadway, Garden City Park, NY 11040. Thank you for your support!
