The Mineola PAL Chiefs 9-year-old's were home this past Sunday at Tully Park, and got defensive as they shut out the Garden City Thunder 13-0. That brings their winning record to 4-1-1.
The Chiefs were able to move the ball on offense because of great, sound blocking by the offensive line, which was centered by Gavin Dowd and anchored by Michael Delio, Lucas Golon, Dominic Paggi and Andrew Hastings. Scoring is summarized below:
• Thomas Davis - 38 yard touchdown run.
• Thomas O'Connell - extra point pass to Teddy Capsis.
• Andrew Cunningham - 3 yard touchdown run.
The Chiefs' defense dominated the Thunders' offense, not giving up any first downs and allowing them to cross midfield only once all day. The defensive line kept the pressure on, led by Naim Smith, Teddy Capsis, Brian Smith and Michael Patalano. The linebackers were fearless and attacked the ball with reckless abandonment, led by Thomas O'Connell, Andrew Cunningham, and Thomas Davis. On the their last drive of the game Garden City went to the air and tried passing, but that didn't work either, as the ball was intercepted by O'Connell for Mineola. The Chiefs took a knee and the game over.
All the boys played and participated in the victory. The boys showed great character and sportsmanship. Other players who also contributed in the win were James Gerstner, Kyle Spruill, and Ryan Eccher. Kyle Facibene and Joe Pino were unable to play, but were there to cheer on their teammates.
