At the outset of the last New Hyde Park/Garden City Park School Board meeting School Superintendent Dr. Regina Cohn announced that word had just been received that Catherine Nugent, wife of school board trustee Robert Nugent died, having lost her valiant battle with cancer.

The board and the audience all stood for a moment of silence in honor of Catherine Nugent and many of them expressed great shock and sadness upon hearing the news.

Catherine Nugent was a longtime resident of New Hyde Park. She leaves, along with her husband Robert, her two daughters Susan and Marlyse. She is survived by her parents A. Charles and Mary Lou Catapano, of North Bellmore and her mother-in-law Bernadette Nugent.

She is also survived by her sister Mary Gonnelly, her brothers Charles (Jeannine), Michael (Deanna), Joseph (Nancy) Catapano. Her brother Andrew predeceased her. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Nugent attended St. John's University where she graduated with a degree as a pharmacist. She was also a member of the New Hyde Park Road School PTA.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church, New Hyde Park. Interment was at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale. Arrangements were under the direction of the New Hyde Park Funeral Home.
